Innovative Tools for Cyber-Physical Energy Systems - EU Innovative Training Network

Om os

The principal goal of the InnoCyPES (Innovative Tools for Cyber-Physical Energy Systems) ITN is to provide world-leading and transferable scientific training to a new generation of 15 high-achieving early stage researchers (ESRs). In the course of their training, they will study, investigate and improve various facets of digitalized and interconnected energy systems. Supervised by a consortium of prominent and experienced academic institutions, research institutes and industrial partners, they will collaboratively develop a cutting-edge system management platform that covers the entire lifecycle of data for energy system planning, operation and maintenance, based on an understanding of the energy system as a cyber-physical system. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 956433.

    - What challenges are imposed by the current limitation on the transient stability of grid-forming converters? - In which situations does a grid-forming converter transition between current-saturation mode and normal operation mode? - Under which circumstances does a grid-forming converter fail to recover from the current-saturation mode to the normal operation mode? Our recent paper, Modeling Fault Recovery and Transient Stability of Grid-Forming Converters Equipped With Current Reference Limitation, focuses on addressing the above questions. You can access the paper at https://lnkd.in/e6bm5eii. I would like to thank Prof. Bikash Pal, Dr. Yifei Guo, and Dr. Guangya Yang for their invaluable contributions and to acknowledge the funding support from the InnoCyPES Marie Curie project.

A few days ago, I submitted the first version of my #PhD thesis for internal review. I know modifications will be needed, and the defence will still wait for at least a few months. Still, the feelings of 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 are starting to kick in. When I left Brasil to begin this adventure around 3 years ago, I could never imagine how many amazing people I would meet, how much I would learn, and how many incredible places I would visit. Since LinkedIn is more on the professional side, I'll leave my personal reflections for other social media. Here, I want to thank the Department of Geosciences and InnoCyPES, also extending to my supervisors, Alexey Pavlov, Damiano Varagnolo, and Børre Tore Børresen, for the fantastic experiences they enabled me to have during my project. I am eager to face the next challenges awaiting me!

Excited to have presented at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) during the Sustainable Energy Week 2024 in Geneva! It was a privilege to showcase the work Andrei Covatariu and I have done on the digitalization of the non-electricity sector (https://lnkd.in/g4Hp9PXq). A huge thanks to all our colleagues from the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency and the 'Digitalization in Energy' Task Force for their hard work and support, with special appreciation to our outstanding Chairs, Andrei Covatariu and Elizabeth Massey, for their exceptional leadership. Our report highlighted two key insights and numerous examples on the twin transition in the non-electricity sector: 🔹 Digitalization can drive significant cost savings and increase reliability in supply-side sectors like oil, gas, and hydrogen by improving efficiencies across operations. 🔶 On the demand side, digitalization can enhance the efficiency and smartness of end-use consumption, such as through smart cooking, heating, and cooling systems, enabling more sustainable energy use. Many thanks as well to Igor L., and to the panel members Sylvain Clermont, ing. M.Ing. , Dr. Erlijn van Genuchten, and Alexey Tulikov for their excellent contributions and panel discussions. Special acknowledgment to DTU Wind and Energy Systems and InnoCyPES for all the support! Looking forward to the next steps and continued collaboration! #UNECE #Digitalization #SustainableEnergy #EnergyEfficiency #Collaboration #Geneva

Excited for tomorrow’s session at the InnoCyPES PhD Summer School! Join us on Wednesday, September 11th, 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM CET for a deep dive into questions such as: how to assess the costs and benefits of digitalization in electricity distribution grids? What are the barriers hindering digitalization? How to apply modeling tools to assess the complexity of digitalization in energy? How these tools can enable both qualitative and quantitative analyses? I'm thrilled to co-present with Roberto Monaco on System Dynamics in Energy Digitalization: Enhancing Decision-Making and Regulatory Analysis. 📍 Location: In person at the University of Salento, Lecce (Italy) or online via Teams. 💻 Online link: https://lnkd.in/gXVgWuSb Meeting ID: 354 118 288 744 Passcode: SkSXms Looking forward to a great discussion! ⚡ #Digitalization #EnergySystems #SystemDynamics #InnoCyPES #PhDSummerSchool

Within the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe 'Digitalization in Energy' Task Force, one of our main focuses has been on monitoring emerging trends that drive innovation in the energy sector. In the study 'The Twin Transition in Non-Electricity Sectors' (https://lnkd.in/gsHb-XjE), I have been delighted to collaborate on expanding our perspectives and uncovering synergies, particularly in exploring how digitalization can benefit energy sectors beyond electricity, including the Oil & Gas and Heating & Cooling sectors. I am looking forward to presenting the main highlights of the paper during the 2024 UNECE Sustainable Energy Week in Geneva, 16-20 September! Special thanks to Andrei Covatariu, the leader of this study, for this exceptional initiative. Additional thanks to DTU Wind and Energy Systems and InnoCyPES for all the support! #energytransition #twintransition #energydigitalization #oil #naturalgas

Energy & Climate Policy | Track II Energy Diplomacy | 📍Brussels | Oxford MPP | Opinions my own |

Over the past years, the UNECE Sustainable Energy | United Nations Economic Commission for Europe ‘s “Digitalization in Energy” Task Force has primarily focused on the intersection of digital technologies and the electricity sector, striving to accelerate decarbonization through enhanced electrification. However, this year, José Ángel Leiva Vilaplana and I decided to explore digitalization in non-electricity sectors. Although these sectors—on both the supply and demand sides—continue to rely on fossil fuels, they stand to gain significantly from digital solutions that can enhance operational efficiency, improve environmental standards, and reduce costs. This paper DOES NOT aim to answer pressing questions or provide immediate solutions. In fact, it does the opposite, it seeks to open a discussion by raising critical questions about the role of digitalization in energy sectors beyond electricity. One of our goals is to increase awareness among UNECE Member States and the expert community globally, fostering deeper collaboration and analysis on issues of shared concern. To this end, stakeholders and policymakers interested in this topic are encouraged to reach out. The paper will be presented during the 2024 UNECE Sustainable Energy Week in Geneva, 16-20 September, and will be followed by comprehensive research and publications on the topic starting from 2025. The exploratory paper, “Twin Transition in Non-Electricity Sectors,” is available here: https://lnkd.in/d48n9pjz Dario Liguti, Iva Brkic, Stefan M.
