"Should we go to church for the architecture?" Tomorrow evening, Jan Yoshiyuki Tanaka will join AfterDAC (Danish Architecture Center (Dansk Arkitektur Center) for a conversation about the potential of church spaces alongside priest/writer Kristian Ditlev Jensen and artist Alexander Tovborg. Born in Denmark in a Christian culture, brought up with Thai Buddhism that has roots in India while being shaped by Japenese Shinto, Jan has a very personal perspective on spiritual space. He will also share insights from JAJA projects such as 'Sola Church' and 'Sydhavn Church'. Featuring both a priest and an artist, and moderated by Architect and TV/radio host Ane Cortzen, this event is sure to be exciting! To create a functional extension while respecting the historic villa, our design for the Bagsværd Observation Home establishes an equal relationship between the villa and the new garden house. From the historic lakeside, the iconic villa remains the focal point, overlooking the prominent landscape. From the entrance side, the garden house is positioned to clearly mark the entrance and main access point. The project is made in collaboration with BOGL aps and ABC - Rådgivende Ingeniører for Landsforeningen LIVSVÆRK, generously supported by Realdania and The A.P Møller Foundation. We are pleased and proud to present the completed Bagsværd Observation Home — a unique place that helps children and families who need extra support during difficult times. To create a functional extension while respecting the historic villa, we proposed establishing an equal relationship between the villa and the new garden house. From the landmark lakeside, the iconic villa remains the focal point, overlooking the prominent landscape. On the entrance side, The Garden House is positioned to clearly mark the entrance and main access point. Exposing the wood as much as possible, our vision has been to create a positive and welcoming building, that the residents feel comfortable in. By minimising wind impact, the new building's rounded corners contribute to a comfortable microclimate in the living areas around the Garden House. This is achieved by cutting CLT elements into smaller faceted parts, which are then assembled to form round corners harmonising with the visible CLT walls inside. Externally, narrower cedar boards are used around the corners, giving a unified appearance all around the building. The project is made in collaboration with BOGL aps and ABC - Rådgivende Ingeniører for Landsforeningen LIVSVÆRK, generously supported by Realdania and The A.P Møller Foundation. We always strive to create cities, buildings and urban spaces with more play, movement and quality of life! As we see more municipalities and communities looking for new approaches to creating more movement between buildings, we are happy to present our approach at Idrættens Branchedage on November 5. At the event, Jan Yoshiyuki Tanaka will highlight projects such as Gigantium Urban Space, Streetmekka Aalborg and Konditaget Lüders, demonstrating how repurposing existing urban spaces, facilities, and materials can inspire more movement and play. We are excited to present our proposal for the Gard Headquarters, developed in collaboration with our friends from Oslotre AS, I-d. Interiørarkitektur & design AS, Lala Tøyen AS, and Vill Energi. Located in Arendal, Norway, our design features a new main building constructed as a demountable and regenerative timber structure, utilizing innovative timber-to-timber construction technologies. This approach eliminates the use of steel and significantly reduces overall CO2 emissions. Additionally, the building features a natural ventilation system, promoting healthy work environments alongside the extensive use of biomaterials. Nestled between the hills and the sea, the building offers a welcoming and safe space in a bright, natural setting for employees, clients, and visitors alike. Out of 39 submissions in the first round, we are proud to have been one of three teams shortlisted for the final stage. Congratulations to Hille Melbye and edit for their winning proposal!

We and our friends from SLA and Alexandria Algard Architects have been privileged to work with a parallel assignment in Våland, Stavanger, exploring how to transform the existing hospital into a vibrant and integral part of the city. Over the next 15 years, the hospital’s functions will gradually relocate to a new site at Ullandhaug, while the Våland area, bit by bit, opens up new possibilities. This project seeks to thoughtfully plan for the future, discussing how urban planning can align with planetary boundaries in the coming years. Our strategy is centred on the key principles: • Demolish as little as possible • Find the right program for the existing structures, rather than reshaping to fit a desired program • Open up, both mentally and physically • Fill in and densify. With this strategy, we made a proposal that prioritizes people, integrates green spaces, removes cars, and returns the area to the surrounding neighbourhoods – making it an intertwined part of the future Stavanger. By introducing functions that provide social interaction between neighbourhoods and providing affordable housing options, our vision for Våland is a bold reimagining of how the area can weave into the urban fabric of Stavanger on human terms.

Milestone! After two years of intensive construction, the Bagsværd Observation Home is ready to support a unique social programme. Originally built as a summer villa for the royal court dentist in the early 1900s, the new home, located by the scenic Bagsværd Lake, will now serve children and families needing extra support during difficult times. The villa has undergone extensive renovation and expansion, blending historical charm with modern functionality to meet the needs of today’s families. Above the basement level, the new villa extension is constructed as a lightweight structure with load-bearing structures primarily made of wood in a combination of CLT walls, CLT decks, glulam columns, and structural timber. The building design prioritizes community, offering shared living areas between individual apartments, with balconies overlooking the garden and nearby lake. Residents can also access the garden directly from their living spaces, fostering a close connection with nature. As a test project for Den Frivillige Bæredygtighedsklasse (the Voluntary Sustainability Standard), the Bagsværd Observation Home aims to embrace environmental, climate, social, and economic quality. We are proud to have contributed to such an impactful project for Landsforeningen LIVSVÆRK. The project is made in collaboration with BOGL aps and ABC - Rådgivende Ingeniører for Landsforeningen LIVSVÆRK, generously supported by Realdania and The A.P Møller Foundation. We are thrilled to find out that the Plusbus in Aalborg Kommune sets new passenger records with more than 15.000 passengers last Friday! We played a small part in the project, transforming a former loading area into a new plaza and bus stop that invites passengers to the sports centre Gigantium. Plusbus is a BRT – Bus Rapid Transit – a high-class bus connection created to make faster journeys, fewer traffic jams, and fewer road traffic accidents. The buses can carry over 150 passengers, are quieter, and occupy less space in the cityscape than the cars.
