💶 Study Highlights Impact of #CashAssistance on #AfghanRefugees' Reintegration Study by @Hisham Esper, @Nadini Krishan and @Christina Wieser explores the effects of #UNHCR’s cash support to Afghan refugees returning from #Pakistan between 2016-2018, focusing on how varying assistance levels influenced post-return outcomes. Key Findings: · Returnees who received $350 per person used it to buy long-term assets, including land (21% vs. 7% of those who received $150). · Those with larger allowances were 17% more likely to own a home and 30% more likely to secure legal documentation for their families. · Smaller allowances often covered essential consumption—half was spent on food. · Education and employment outcomes saw no impact from assistance levels. This research underscores the significant role cash assistance plays in home ownership, legal documentation, and consumption patterns for returnees, shaping more resilient reintegration. The impact of the Permiso Especial de Permanencia (#PEP) program on #Venezuelans' wellbeing in #Colombia: the study estimates the effects of granting regular status to over half a million #undocumented Venezuelans, offering them work permits, access to social services, and financial products. Key Findings: Job Formalization: Formal #employment increased by 10 percentage. #SocialServices Access: Significant boosts in Sisbén registration and financial service access. Improved #Wellbeing: PEP holders saw gains in income (31%), consumption (60%), and physical / #mentalhealth (1.8 standard deviations). Enhanced #Resilience: Reduced #foodinsecurity and better #integration into #hostcommunities. The study underscores the benefits of regularization, accelerating integration, and improving refugee wellbeing, suggesting host countries facilitate refugee integration for mutual benefits. Joint Data Center on Forced Displacement genopslog dette
“There’s a huge momentum around the data that’s being produced on people forced to flee,” says Maja Lazic, Deputy Head of the World Bank-UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Joint Data Center on Forced Displacement 📈 The JDC is working to improve how data on forcibly displaced populations is collected, analysed and shared. Maja believes these improvements can drive positive policy changes toward forcibly displaced people, and hopes that this results in long-term benefits for people who have endured years of displacement 🌍 “What I really hope for is that what we’re doing in the JDC will help pave the way for governments, development and humanitarian organisations to have a lasting, positive effect on people forced to flee,” she says. When millions of Venezuelans fled to #Colombia, the government took a liberal approach. Did this then influence political behavior? At the 3rd Research Conference on Forced Displacement in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire last month, María José Urbina Flórez presented surprising findings: the PEP program—designed to regularize migrants—has negligible electoral effects. Native political behaviors remained largely unaffected by policies that ease migrants' economic integration, especially where there is a large informal sector and controlled migration. 📽️Curious to learn more? How do large cash grants in #Pakistan and sanctions on Iran affect #Afghanrefugees in these countries? And what is the relationship between refugee repatriation and conflict? Christopher Blair and Austin L. Wright found that sanction-induced repatriation increased insurgent violence and perceptions of insecurity but did not worsen communal tensions. In short, the impact of refugee return varies across different types of political and social violence. 🎬Watch Christopher’s presentation at the 3rd Research Conference on Forced Displacement in Abidjan last month: https://lnkd.in/dFWqiHtw 📙Read the paper: https://bit.ly/48l72HA 💽View the presentation: https://bit.ly/3YB9KEr #Returnees #PoliticalViolence #AfghanCrisis
