The Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) is a global business network working towards the vision of a maritime industry free of corruption that enables fair trade to the benefit of society at large. Established in 2011, and formalized in 2012, MACN is comprised of vessel owning companies within the main sectors of the maritime industry and other companies in the maritime industry including cargo owners and service providers. BSR (Business for Social Responsibility) is the secretariat of MACN. MACN and its members promote good corporate practice in the maritime industry for tackling bribes, facilitation payments and other forms of corruption. MACN collaborates with key stakeholders, including governments and international organizations, such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to identify and mitigate the root causes of corruption in the maritime industry.

In November, MACN visited its members in Hamburg, including Hapag-Lloyd AG, NSB GROUP, Oldendorff Carriers GmbH & Co. KG, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, and Cetus Maritime. Discussions with members revealed both unique perspectives and shared challenges, highlighting several industry-wide priorities: Navigating Changing Regulations: - Members emphasized the need to adapt to evolving regulatory frameworks, particularly those that strengthen the focus on corruption prevention. Promoting Transparency: - Openly reporting bribe and facilitation payment requests remains a critical strategy. Aggregated, anonymous data from these reports supports risk mapping and fosters public-private dialogues to shape effective policies. Strengthening the Value Chain: - Addressing corruption risks requires collaboration across the entire value chain—from cargo owners, shipowners and ship-managers to seafarers and port agents. Equipping all stakeholders to handle these risks effectively is essential. These conversations reinforced the benefits of shared learning within the Network. Members showcased how corruption prevention is increasingly embedded in day-to-day operations, moving beyond traditional compliance approaches to become a core part of business practice. We would like to thank all participating members for their time, insights, and commitment to driving positive change in the maritime industry.

Earlier this month, MACN participated in Synergy Marine Group's crew seminar in Kochi, engaging with their dedicated seafarers. Synergy's commitment to reject maritime corruption and promote integrity was reflected in their seafarers’ engagement, knowledge sharing, and acknowledgment that illicit payments cannot continue. MACN's key message to the crew: • Say NO to corruption • Report every incident • Seek support from Synergy and MACN Together with industry leaders like Synergy, MACN continues to build toward our vision of a corruption-free maritime industry. Special thanks to Synergy's leadership team for championing maritime integrity and fostering a culture of transparency.
