MAST has unveiled the `Water Tower´pavilion at the Danish Architecture Center (Dansk Arkitektur Center). The pavilion sits at the centre of the new exhibition `water is coming´ which explores the critical role of water in forming our built environments. The project is an experiment in utilising resources from the sea in construction, with an eel-grass cladding and an experimental solution for a floating foundation made from recycled foam glass. Thanks to Dinesen, Søuld, Dansk Celleglas ApS, Knud Højgaards Fond and Krohns for their generous support. And a special thanks to Vano Ksnelashvili, Mo Al Sbeih, Niels Wijnen, Martha Trivett, Josefine Bols, Josefine Rying and the students at NEXT KBH for their incredible work on the project. The exhibition will run until March 2025.

Marshall Blecher discusses the future of floating urbanism on Monocle Magazine’s ‘the urbanist’ podcast Can floating cities be the solution to rising sea levels? Can architecture prepare in advance for coastal changes? what are some ways that our cities are, or should be, interacting with water. Marshall discusses these issues together with host Andrew tuck. Other guests include Architect Weston Wright discusses his book on the paradigm shift required for cities to prepare for sea-level rise: “More Water, Less Land, New Architecture” and Glyn Lewis of Renewal Development describes how the firm has used the waterways around Vancouver to relocate rather than demolish houses that are cleared for development, as well as how to deliver them to communities in need. Introducing Salinas Comporta A new hotel concept built on an abandoned salt production lagoon in Southern Portugal. Set among a landscape of Atlantic pine forests and rice paddies, The `salina´ has a history of salt production dating back at least three hundred years but was abandoned in the early 2000s and has since become overgrown by saltbush and other halophytic vegetation. The channels and ponds which wind around the 50ha site have since become breeding grounds for brine shrimp which in turn attract flocks of flamingos and oystercatchers. Central to the project are the timber stilt houses, small cabins inspired by the traditional fisherman’s huts and jetties which dot the lagoons and rivers of Southern Portugal. The cabins are accessible by foot via winding elevated walkways or by boat or kayak. The cabins will be prefabricated off site from Portuguese CLT reducing the impact of the construction on the delicate landscape. MAST’s vision for the site also includes the transformation of a dilapidated salt production building into a restaurant and spa and the introduction of a new cluster of agricultural buildings which are inspired by traditional Portuguese wooden salt storage warehouses. These new agricultural buildings will service a section of the site which will be returned to operation and produce small batches of artisanal salt. This process, dating back millenia, involves channeling saltwater through a network of narrow channels, where it slowly evaporates until it settles in large ponds, leaving behind mineral rich salt deposits.
