Last week, after the MTEC-ICMASS conference in Trondheim, Norway, we held a productive follow-up meeting with our #HORIZON partners to drive sustainable maritime shipping forward. 🚢 Together, we mapped out progress, plans, and upcoming goals focused on enhancing Just-In-Time (JIT) port-call optimisation and port entry with real-time data. These innovations are bringing us closer to a future of more efficient, digitalised shipping that is better for our people, planet and the economy. 🌍 Thanks to our partners and the Dynaport and Seamless projects for this productive meeting! 💼 #SustainableShipping #Innovation #HorizonEurope DYNAPORT project | SEAMLESS Project | Syddansk Universitet - University of Southern Denmark | Fundación Valenciaport | Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) | Åbo Akademi University | Awake.AI | CETENA S.p.A. - Centro per gli Studi di Tecnica Navale | National Technical University of Athens | REVOLVE | Terminal Industry Committee 4.0 - TIC4.0 | DFDS | VTT | DLR Institut für den Schutz maritimer Infrastrukturen | DLR Institute Systems Engineering for Future Mobility | German Aerospace Center (DLR) | CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici | Fintraffic | Royal Dirkzwager | Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping | NAPA | Blue Visby | IOTA | Assoporti - Italian Ports Association | Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar Ligure occidentale | Piraeus Port Authority-PPA/OLP-COSCO Shipping | Klaipėdos uostas/Port of Klaipėda | Stockholm University | Ership Grupo | E&S Tankers | Cosco Shipping Lines(Spain)S.A | Finnlines | Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) | Port of Antwerp-Bruges | Dimitris Spyrou

Trondheim, Norway offered a beautiful backdrop to the intensive MTEC-ICMASS conference co-hosted by Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and SINTEF last week. The MISSION Project also connected with sister project DYNAPORT project. 🌊 Followed by the General Assembly at the SINTEF SeaLab, we also welcomed SEAMLESS Project to our cluster of HORIZON Maritime Transport & Shipping projects! 🚢 Together, we’re accelerating towards a future where maritime transport & shipping is more efficient, safer, and environmentally friendly. ⚓🌍 Learn more about our new partner project SEAMLESS here: https://lnkd.in/dwV6NGVb For highlights from MTEC and ICMASS 2024, check out the event details: https://lnkd.in/gKFE9EFP #MaritimeInnovation #ShippingEfficiency #Sustainability #Trondheim #HorizonEurope

🚢 Collaboration with partner projects is a crucial step in the pursuit of realising the Just In Time arrival concept on a global scale! 🌊 The DYNAPORT project consortium co-hosted a roundtable workshop together with the MISSION Project this week - its sister project. Constructive discussions made the project’s common pathway more evident, with concrete common activities and collaborative action points being set. The workshop also kicked off the collaboration between the two sister projects and the SEAMLESS Project. Thank you to participants from all three projects for making the discussions fruitful and multifaceted. A special thanks to the international associated partners Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI), and Korea Maritime & Ocean University, who were invited to share their valuable insights. Finally, meeting the MISSION Project people in person during the consortium meeting in Trondheim. Great discussions and so many ideas afterwards! The project is close to my heart as it aims to resolve the problem of ships ‘rushing to wait’ we explored at the Lab. of Industrial Management - Åbo Akademi University some 10 years ago https://lnkd.in/dfJ6QJEd The problem that seems so easy to solve if maritime actors collaborate - yet so tricky in practice. Digitalisation can be the key to this riddle if it enables transparency, communication and new ways of working. At the same time, to realise the value of digital solutions, new business models are needed - something we will be working on in the coming years. Outside of work, fun experiences were there too: 🔹 exhibition about salmon farming: did you know salmon can have lice and is washed in warm water to get rid of them? 🔹 lovely project dinner on Halloween night 🎃 🔹 some amazing news I got while standing in the middle of a snowstorm (coming soon)

This year’s MTEC/ICMASS conference is over. The topics related to both port technologies and autonomous shipping are of great interest for my research, so I got double value from attending. Well, triple value considering the opportunity to meet some new people, as well as colleagues from MISSION Project and the co-author of the paper on sustainability of autonomous shipping that I presented here https://lnkd.in/dEJi5P2Q Good weather, as usual, followed me, but that didn’t stop me from appreciating the Nordic beauty of Trondheim 🇳🇴(at least from the hotel window)

📢 Exciting News! We are happy to share a recent conference paper publication related to the MISSION Project by our Maritime Risk Group (MRG) members, which will also be presented in the upcoming MTEC/ICMASS 2024 Conference (https://lnkd.in/dJRYuZUf) in Trondheim, Norway, by our colleague Manolis Annetis. Meanwhile, the paper titled ‘Just in Time Port Call Optimisation: Preliminary Regulatory Compliance Evaluation and Environmental Performance Assessment’ has already been published in the Journal of Physics. MISSION Project aims to digitalise the maritime sector through the development of a Just-In-Time port call optimisation and decision support tool, with the purpose of decreasing GHG emissions and associated costs, as well as port traffic and thus enhancing maritime safety. 🚢 💡This paper attempts to shed light on some of the challenges related to the JIT concept, by focusing on the maritime regulatory framework and on emission reduction potential from speed adaptation. Results provide a baseline for regulatory compliance evaluation for such a system, and a preliminary environmental performance assessment from JIT arrival applied on an actual ship case. 🔗Click below for full paper access: https://lnkd.in/dgjDU8MZ #MaritimeInnovation #SustainableShipping #MISSIONEUProject #JustInTime #VoyageOptimisation
