Repairing a submarine cable system in just 29 days When the Baltic Cable interconnector - a 250 kilometer long power cable interconnecting the power grids of Sweden and Germany - was damaged, NKT delivered a fast and efficient solution. Explore the key factors behind the quick repair: Spare parts: Having immediate access to spare cable from the customer’s stock sped up the process. Expertise and equipment: Being familiar with the cables and region, we ensured minimal disruption, putting our expertise to work for a rapid solution. It took only five days to locate the fault, debury and prepare the cable for repair on our vessel NKT Victoria. Communication: Effective coordination with all stakeholders kept the repair process on track, minimizing downtime. Reaching our targets of 90% reduction of our scope 1 and 2 emissions is already happening. One of the many projects involved is to have all our forklifts powered on renewable energies by 2027 latest. Today we are celebrating a great milestone achieved this year: in two of our manufacturing sites, Warszowice (Poland) and Drammen (Norway), all 50+ forklifts are now operating 100% on renewable electricity.

Reflecting on 2024, one of our exciting achievements was finalizing the Shetland #HVDC Link. This groundbreaking project connects the remote Shetland Islands archipelago to the Scottish mainland, marking the first #renewableenergy connection of the islands. As the turnkey supplier for the complete HVDC cable system, we are proud to have been responsible for design and manufacturing the cable system, onshore cable installation, offshore cable-laying with the NKT Victoria, jointing and termination works, and culminating with testing. Once fully operational, our #powercables will connect the 103-turbine Viking Energy Wind Farm harnessing Shetland’s famously windy conditions to generate clean energy, powering approximately 500,000 homes – including every household on the Shetland Islands. This green link is pivotal in fully tapping into Shetland’s wind energy potential, making it the UK’s most productive onshore wind farm. A key focus of this project was minimizing our environmental footprint. The Shetland Islands are home to unique flora and fauna, including ground-nesting birds and sea otters. NKT has been awarded two turnkey projects in Germany under the existing multi-year framework agreement with the transmission system operator, TenneT. The projects are part of TenneT’s 2GW Program, which is considered one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the energy transition of Europe. “We are thrilled to once again be selected as a key partner for TenneT’s ambitious 2GW Program. This confirms our strong partnership and NKT’s leading position in the high-voltage DC power cable market. We look forward to applying our advanced power cable technology to these two additional projects in Germany, which will enable the energy transition in Europe by facilitating the efficient transport of wind power from the North Sea to the onshore grid,” says Claes Westerlind, President and CEO, NKT. https://lnkd.in/dSkqtAxc

Christmas spirit at the factory! It may look like the world’s longest candy cane, but it’s actually a 145 kV HVAC offshore power cable being produced at our Swedish site in Karlskrona for installation in 2025. Fun fact: The outer layer of a submarine cable is made from yarn. While the colors change from project to project, we always ensure a colorful spiral pattern to improve visibility.
