# Demonstrating KubeAid (part 0) - Building a custom ARM64 based Ubuntu 24.04 AMI for ClusterAPI, targetting latest Kubernetes version v1.31.0 When working in AWS, ClusterAPI requires custom AMIs for the VMs that host the Kubernetes cluster. These AMIs must include essential tools like `kubeadm`, `kubelet`, `containerd` etc. pre-installed. These custom AMIs are built using the the [image-builder](https://lnkd.in/g-4dzkqg) project. While the Kubernetes SIG team provides [pre-built AMIs](https://lnkd.in/drzhj7yr), they currently **lack support for ARM CPU architecture and the recent versions of Kubernetes and Ubuntu**. To address this, we have [forked](https://lnkd.in/dfCD6r_T) the image-builder project and added support for the above. This blog post will guide you through : how to build a custom ARM64 based Ubuntu 24.04 AMI for ClusterAPI, targetting the latest Kubernetes version v1.31.0.

With the rise in attacks on computers - things like cryptolocker attacks, that shuts entire companies down.. There's finally been an increasing focus on securing systems against these attacks, but I still see that a lot of people either loose sight off - or don't know - the important basics of HOW you protect your servers against this. #cybersecurity #linux #devops

Author: Klavs Klavsen - Head of Obmondo.com - https://lnkd.in/dCTyHMsx For the past 25 years, I've been deeply immersed in operations, focusing on automation and optimizing the code deployment cycle to ensure speed and reliability. My work has involved collaborating closely with developers to create robust systems with comprehensive instrumentation. This has allowed me to build dashboards and monitoring tools that maintain high performance, even in high-traffic environments. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this journey and the challenges it has brought. Throughout my career, I’ve been a staunch advocate for open source software. Open source has provided me with the flexibility and tools to deliver solutions efficiently, without being dependent on external entities. The open source community has been a constant source of inspiration, and I’ve always appreciated the collaborative spirit it fosters. I’ve done my best to contribute back to this community whenever I could. Six years ago, I decided to pivot from traditional consultancy to a venture I was passionate about, one that would allow me to contribute more significantly to the community. This led to the founding of Obmondo.com, a service dedicated to developing solutions for operating open source software on Linux and Kubernetes. Our unique approach is to release everything we build as open source. Our flagship project, KubeAid.io, is designed to manage Kubernetes throughout its entire lifecycle. Over the years, we’ve gained valuable experience and grown our team to around 30 people, all dedicated to creating and supporting open source solutions while assisting our customers. In my consulting days, the solutions I developed were the property of the client, which meant I couldn’t reuse or share improvements with others facing similar issues. Each client had a unique implementation, often built from scratch. By contrast, delivering everything through KubeAid as open source allows us to share our work with everyone. This model is particularly effective since many of our clients require similar features and maintenance tasks, such as security updates. By sharing the cost of these developments across all users, we can achieve more efficient results. Looking ahead, I plan to have our SREs write blog posts detailing our open source contributions, offering insights and solutions to common challenges. Topics might include integrating central authentication in Kubernetes environments with Keycloak or utilizing Keycloak with Graylog open source edition. If you have more ideas, I’d love to hear them in the comments. We’re also transitioning from using kops with Terraform to Cluster-API for managing Kubernetes. As we progress, we aim to share articles and resources that document our improvements and automation efforts, making the process more user-friendly.
