𝐌𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐫...    Imagine going to your rheumatologist appointment, only to discover that instead of a person, it’s a robot, specifically #ARTHUR, conducting your joint ultrasound.     For patients with rheumatoid arthritis (#RA), ultrasound examinations are a valuable tool in clinical settings, because ultrasound examination of the joints can detect RA earlier than clinical joint examination, and in established RA patients predict radiographic progression and disease flare.     But how does it feel when it’s a robot, not a human, performing these crucial scans?  A study by ROPCA’S founders explored how patients feel about being examined by ARTHUR, our automated ultrasound #robot, versus a traditional exam with a rheumatologist.   🔎 25 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients had both hands and wrists scanned   🧑⚕️ by a rheumatologist and   🤖 by ARTHUR  After each scan, patients shared feedback on pain, discomfort, and overall experience.    Here’s what they told us:  Pain & Discomfort: No difference at all! Patients felt just as comfortable with ARTHUR as they did with a human specialist (p=0.29 and p=0.20, respectively).  Experience: 92% rated their time with ARTHUR as “very good” or “good,” the same level as with the rheumatologist (p=0.50).  And the cherry on top? All 25 patients said they’d gladly be examined by ARTHUR again!    The results indicate that fully automated systems like ARTHUR could become essential in future RA management, providing dependable and patient-friendly options for assessing disease activity.     🚀 So why could #AI be a game-changer in rheumatology?  There are many factors that challenge the current and future use of ultrasound, as identified in the study (e.g. departments do not take into account the time required for training and performing ultrasound in routine care). 💡 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 that rheumatoid arthritis adds an 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮 $𝟯,𝟯𝟴𝟯 to a patient's annual healthcare costs? 📊 According to a recent study by the University of Mississippi, approximately 4.27 million #Americans living with #RA face significant challenges: · Higher out-of-pocket costs or prescription medication costs  · Reduced quality of life, affecting both mental and physical health Yinan Huang, the study’s lead author, points out that #RA patients bear a larger financial and emotional burden compared to the general population. With the aging U.S. #population, RA cases are projected to increase, and without proper treatment, the condition can lead to disability. A deeper understanding of the disease can lead to stronger #support systems, improved #policies and more tailored care for the population. Looking ahead, the next step in the study will be to compare the severity of rheumatoid arthritis pain between patients to determine who is most affected by the disease. As Jieni Li, co-author of the study, explains, “These days, people are talking about individualized, personalized care. From the study’s objective, that’s what we want to provide more for RA patients.” 🔑 Key Takeaway: The study highlights the #financial burden faced by RA patients, many of whom spend an average of $3,383 per year in additional healthcare costs. 🚨 Industry insights - Advancing Rheumatoid Arthritis Prevention Trials! 🚨 Recent insights from completed prevention clinical trials in #RA have led to #recommendations on future trial designs and drug development.   A key focus is identifying individuals at high risk for #RA through various methods, including population screening, referrals of arthralgia suspicious for RA and serologies.    Thus far, patients with pre-clinical #RA have not responded effectively to limited courses of treatments such as corticosteroids, atorvastatin and hydroxychloroquine. While rituximab may delay the onset of clinical RA, methotrexate offers only temporary benefits in ACPA+ individuals with subclinical joint inflammation. Published data indicate that abatacept can delay RA onset but does not fully prevent it.     The authors suggest future trials of interventions focus on:  1️⃣ Preventing clinical RA onset  2️⃣ Treating existing symptoms  3️⃣ Improving imaging for subclinical inflammation    The challenge, however, lies in identifying, defining, and risk-stratifying those at risk for RA.  This is where #ROCPA can make an impact.
