Johanna Skans opened the 'Eyes on Sustainability' Conference The 'Eyes on Sustainability' conference was held on October 2 in Brighton, UK, organised by Simon Jones and the Optician. It focused on addressing the environmental and social challenges facing the global eyewear industry. As a keynote speaker, Johanna Skans shared her journey from optometrist to visionary leader and pioneering entrepreneur, centered around the theme of "Protecting What We Love." 'After all, isn’t the true essence of sustainability about safeguarding what matters most to us? What do you love? Your children? Nature? Your grandchildren? Our goal is to ensure future generations inherit a planet where they can not only survive but thrive.'   The event gathered key players from the global eyewear industry, focusing on promoting sustainable practices, tackling challenges, and exploring innovative solutions to reduce the industry's environmental footprint. Johanna concluded her speech by posing a question to the audience: 'How can you best serve the world with the knowledge and tools you have?' Today, we ask you the same question: How can you best serve the world with the knowledge and tools you have?

We are excited to share that SKANS received the prestigious SILMO PARIS 2024 RESPONSIBLE COMPANY AWARD!  We are incredibly grateful and honoured to be recognised with this award, especially alongside such talented finalists. This CSR Award highlights the growing acknowledgment within the optical industry that using business and eyewear to tackle planetary challenges is the way forward. It celebrates the industry's shift to making sustainability a key priority for shaping a sustainable optical future. The Jury’s motivation: “The winning company was chosen for its minimalist approach aimed at slowing down the consumption of eyewear: timeless frames that are only introduced when necessary, reducing the need for frequent updates, timeless packaging (often without printing), to limit the need for redesigns, the availability of identical spare parts for all models, or on-demand production to avoid overstocking. The company also demonstrates an approach that takes into account the entire lifecycle of the frames, for example by using frames made entirely from a single material (100% stainless steel, including nose pads), maximizing recyclability. I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported and inspired me along the way—former colleagues, new acquaintances, my business network, the Jury at SILMO Paris, Hyssop Agency 🌿, Amélie Morel Martin, Meron, Ondrej, Sacha and especially my family and friends who believed in me from the beginning.
