For your development of new materials, accurate measurements ensure that the result reflects the actual value of the analyzed sample. This is vital for understanding the material properties and minimizing systematic errors. So what happens if you experience a reduced level of accuracy, and how does that affect your operations? The correct method, training, automation, continuous service plans, and the correct consumable choice are essential for achieving accuracy. From accurate and tight tolerances on cutting equipment to a precise read on the hardness tester, we are here to help you enhance your accuracy. If curious about more, write YES in the comment field

⏱️ From 20 Hours to Just 1.5 Hours—That’s the Power of Innovation! U-MAP Co., Ltd. , a Nagoya University startup, transformed ceramic substrate preparation by reducing the time for 10 samples from 20 hours to just 1.5 hours. How? By combining the advanced capabilities of Tegramin with a newly developed preparation method. What this means for customers: ✅ Faster delivery of results for time-critical projects. ✅ Increased productivity with simultaneous sample preparation. ✅ Lower operational costs and higher efficiency. This isn’t just about saving time—it’s about delivering more value. #Innovation #MaterialsScience #Tegramin Keiko Hada, Satoshi Takagi, Kinichi Ishikawa, Yuya Hayakawa

Grain hardness testing 🔬 👍 Micro Vickers indentation, HV0.002, on a 0.5% carbon steel specimen. Steel becomes harder and stronger as its carbon content increases, but it loses elasticity. Carbon steel has multiple applications but is commonly used for making shafts, axles, gears, crankshafts, couplings, and forgings. These hardness testing indents were performed with a 2-gram force, and the diagonals are approx. 2 to 3 micrometers in length. They are measured with 1000x magnification. These micro indent measurements from hardness testing enable estimations of the hardness ratio or deviation between the material's different phases for more in-depth characterization. The lighter phase, ferrite, has relatively stable hardness values, while the darker microstructure, pearlite, which consists of two phases, ferrite, and cementite, varies more in hardness values. The ferrite measures around 340 HV0.00,2, while the pearlite averages around 575 HV0.002. The images were taken with a Zeiss Axio Observer and a DuraVista hardness tester, with 500x & 1000x magnification.

Aluminum and Al-alloys or welds of aluminum materials are not easy to prepare, as the material is relatively soft. Still, there are also a few things to consider when etching. During preparation, strong deformations caused by coarse abrasive particles should be avoided, and an excellent final polish with OP-S or OP-U is recommended. Common etching agents containing hydrofluoric acid (Keller, Kroll, Fuss) or hydrofluoric acid-free solutions (sodium hydroxide solution) can be used for etching. These can usually be viewed well in bright field (Fig. 1). An alternative to chemical immersion etching is electrolytic etching with aqueous tetrafluoroboric acid (Barker etchant). This enables a clear representation of the grain size using polarised light in the reflected light microscope (Figs 2, 3, 4). Thanks to Struers Lab Manager Dr. Holger Schnarr for knowledge sharing.

Preparing your samples to be ready for a Vickers hardness test? Are you interested in knowing the required surface condition? Watch to discover... Before placing your sample material in the microhardness testing machine, you should ensure it is correctly prepared for your test. The required surface condition for the Vickers hardness test depends on the load used. Macros hardness testing (loads higher than 1kgf)? Your surface should be ground.
