The overall idea of UPLIFT is to biologically depolymerize bio- and fossil-based plastic packaging waste and convert it into more renewable and easily upcyclable polymers, following a biorefinery approach. UPLIFT will address the full plastic packaging value chain, from monomer production to packaging material manufacturing and back to end of life reusing and recycling options.

🗜 Did you know that we have uploaded a new paper entitled: Improving 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) tolerance of Pseudomonas taiwanensis VLB120 by automated adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE)? 📑 “The aldehyde 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) is of great importance for a circular bioeconomy. It is a renewable platform chemical that can be converted into a range of useful compounds to replace petroleum-based products such as the green plastic monomer 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). The project aims at upcycling PE and PET post-consumer packaging wastes by transforming them into a range of biodegradable & recyclable bioplastics (PHBVs) for food & drink packaging manufacturing.
On 17th October 2024, the upPE-T project welcomed its partners, sister projects UPLIFT - PLASTICS and PRESERVE H2020 and a number of Greek delegates in a conference at the Municipality of Nea Smyrni, where project results regarding the transformation of #plasticpackaging into new materials were presented, followed by a panel discussion for ensuring the steps towards a #zerowaste society through #circulareconomy. Globally, more than 460 million tons of plastic are produced yearly, of which only 9% is collected and recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, incinerators, or in nature ☠️. At Aalborg University, we address this immense challenge through the research and collaboration platform AAU Circular Plastics, and we are proud to announce that we have been acknowledged as a Key Innovator by the EU Innovation Radar program. The basis for the acknowledgment is the results achieved in the EU-funded UPLIFT - PLASTICS project, led by Associate Professor Cristiano Varrone (万思诺) from the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, Aalborg University, Denmark. 🎤 I am very proud of this recognition! It proves that we are on the right track with our sustainable solutions, where we combine enzyme technology with microbial and chemical processes to upcycle plastic waste and turn it into sustainable products, he says. Being a key innovator means that the project is considered highly innovative, with business-ready products at a very high market value level 💚👏. The UPLIFT project, funded by the EU, aims to reduce the production of oil-based plastic products and simultaneously solve the major waste problem. The potential is huge: Using solutions from the UPLIFT project, the EU’s recycling rate of food packaging can be increased from 42% to 60% in the next ten years. This corresponds to an increase in recycled plastic waste by 3.24 million tons per year.
