Patrik Olsson, Magnus Ljungdahl and Tobias Harhoff had the pleasure of welcoming the visitors, who enjoyed interesting conversations and, in a cosy atmosphere, served themselves from the Christmas-themed buffet. This year, we had also invited Niclas Uggla, Head of IP at Heart Aerospace. As our keynote speaker, Niclas generously shared insights into their strategic view of IP, and how they are seconding the development of electric aircraft for regional aviation with IP protection. Thanks to everyone who attended and to Lili Persson for the seamless organisation of the event!

It’s definitely not black and white - Zacco’s latest Podcast, produced with OpSec Security and Managing IP, explores how the Grey Market can impact brand success and reputation.   Parallel imports are genuine products, imported or traded through unauthorised channels, and often sold cheaper than the market retail price of the country they are imported into. They can have a negative effect on distribution agreements and their value, but can also impact consumer trust and behaviour, such as in the case of voided warranties for some electronics or pharmaceuticals.   Patrik Lindahl, one of Zacco’s Digital Brand experts, joins OpSec’s Alessandra C. Vercelloni, a specialist in product authentication and brand protection, to talk to Phil Myers, Commercial Editor at MIP to discuss how the Grey market has been changing in recent years. We are pleased to announce that Karin Kärvling Søholt has joined Zacco’s marketing and communications team as Chief Marketing Officer, effective 1st December 2024.   With over 30 years of experience working within and alongside IP, Karin joined Zacco in 2022 and has been an integral part of growing our market presence.   Karin started her career as an international business lawyer but quickly moved into IP where she spent the next few years in private practice. It was here she discovered a talent for business development, becoming Sales Manager at the firm before co-founding her own business developing IP management software. Following the sale of the company to a global IP technology company, she headed up their Northern Europe Sales and then Strategic Alliances across Europe, before becoming Managing Director at an IP Service Provider. She then joined Zacco from a leading IP Management platform, where she was Global Head of Sales and Marketing. As part of Zacco’s Executive leadership team, she has been a Director since 2022.   “Karin has spent the last few years at Zacco advancing our commercial strategy and driving international alliances, but she has been working alongside us for almost 20 years now” says Antonio Marsico, CEO of Zacco. “She knows our clients, she knows our markets and she knows our business inside out, and I am looking forward to working with her and the marketing team to promote Zacco’s voice and expertise on a global stage.”   Karin added: “It has been a pleasure to work both within and alongside Zacco for so many years, and to see how the organisation has adapted to the changing needs of the IP marketplace. The company has always looked forward, with its international expansion and its IP360 approach, and I have always been impressed by the marketing team in sharing that vision with the public, with our colleagues and with our current and future clients.   Thank you to the NIP - Norwegian IP Managers Association for inviting us to speak to at the NIP Members Christmas meeting yesterday, held at the Elkem headquarters in Oslo.   Our colleague Patrik Olsson shared some thoughts and insight on the first year and a half of the UPC, exploring the reaction within the IP field and the implications of the rapidly expanding case law, as well as some of the interesting cases still under review.   It is always a pleasure to hold such exciting conversations, and we hope that NIP members left with a few more ideas of what the UPC could mean for the future of IP, and for their portfolios.   Thank you especially to Robertha Höglund, the President of the NIP, for both the invitation and for setting the stage for such an interesting discussion.

Our colleagues Karin Kärvling Søholt and Peggy Bengtsson held a Roundtable discussion at IP Service World yesterday.   The discussion, titled ‘When cutting costs just won’t cut it’ explored some of the potential issues that arise from cost saving measures, and potential alternatives when reducing your budget is simply not an option. The new EU Design Regulation and Directive is set to shake up Community Designs and subsequently national designs in the member states. What do the new changes mean for your IP portfolio? Community Designs will be rebranded to EU Designs, in line with EU Trademarks, and many of the changes are intended to reflect the changing use of designs as a crucial element of many IP portfolios. Definition updates include movements such as animations, spatial arrangements such as shop layouts, and graphic works such as GUIs. Scope of protections have been expanded to include 3D printing as a potentially infringing activity, a ‘Prior Use’ defence that formalises existing provisions, and removal of the ‘Unity of Class’ requirement. Cultural Heritage has also been included, allowing member states to set registration and validity conditions for applications that reference national landmarks or traditions, for example. Finally, one of the most significant updates is in making a transitional repair clause permanent, with some amendments, limiting the use of design rights in complex product restoration and repair. Following publication in the Official Journal, the regulation will now enter force on the twentieth day after November 18th, and will apply after four months. Member states will then have three years to introduce the Directive into national legislation. Those who know Zacco, know that we are always excited to share our thoughts on the joys of working with intellectual property.   This morning, we were invited to speak with a company making TV programmes about innovative organisations across Europe. Antonio Marsico, our CEO, and Karin Kärvling Søholt, our new CMO, were both able to explore the importance of developing, protecting and monetising IP.   They introduced the concept of IP rights, such as what patents and trademarks actually protect, alongside assets such as domain names and trade secrets, providing insight into how they can be used to build competitive advantage and drive revenue growth.   Antonio also shared some details of our 150 year history, and what the future of IP could look like with the growth of AI, and with digital assets becoming increasingly embedded in the global economy.   The programme will go out sometime in the next few months, and we can’t wait to share more details in the near future.   Next stop… Hollywood!     #ZaccoIP360 #InnovationAcrossEurope
