👀 🍎 Wondering what AI, apples and the Danish author Grundtvig have in common? And do you have an hour available amidst the Christmas hustle and bustle? Consider spending it in company with AIAS Director Andreas Roepstorff who is exploring how artificial intelligence (#AI) is influencing our democratic conversations. Andreas will dig into what we know and what we do not know about this paradigm shift that #AI has brought about - and that we are very much in the midst of. His talk "Demokratisk AI! Fra æbler til Grundtvig" is in Danish and free of charge through the link below at Det Kongelige Danske Videnskabernes Selskab . Enjoy!👇🏼

What great news 🎉. ERC Consolidator Grant to AIAS Fellow Magdalena Małecka to study the epistemic role of computer technology in modern economics. Magdalena Małecka is awarded the #ERCCoG by the European Research Council (ERC) for her project entitled 'Encoded Knowledge: Epistemology of Computer Technology in Modern Economics (ENCODED).' The new project is a development of her AIAS #MSCA fellowship project. 💡 In her ENCODED research project, Magdalena Małecka will investigate how the use of computer technology in modern economics has transformed economic research over decades, and she will study the implications this has brought about since the 1950s. 💬 “Computer technology does not enter economics with the current AI hype. It has been transforming economic research for decades. Hence, it is high time to understand the outcome, meaning and consequences of this transformation,” Magdalena explains. 💡 Her ENCODED ERC project will put #digital data and #algorithms at the center of philosophical analyses of economics. 💡The grant enables Magdalena to put together an #interdisciplinary research team that aims at providing an innovative interdisciplinary philosophical approach based on insights from the philosophy of science, history of economics, science and technology studies and the philosophy of data and algorithms. Her interdisciplinary approach seeks to advance our understanding of the scientific status of modern #economics and its societal and political influence. Congratulations to Magdalena with this great achievement - at AIAS we are looking forward to follow the progress of this project 👏🏼 . 🔗More about the ENCODED project here: https://lnkd.in/dbUwskyt

🤔 Dishonest behaviors like tax evasion impose significant societal costs. Ex-ante honesty oaths—commitments to honesty before action—have been proposed as interventions, but their effectiveness is debated. JOIN the next AIAS Seminar with AIAS-PIREAU Fellow Panagiotis Mitkidis to hear about the results of a mega-study of more than 21,000 people who played an incentivized tax evasion game where honesty oaths and no-oath condition were tested. Panagiotis Mitkidis is studying human #behavior such as prosocial elements (#trust, #cooperation and #commitment) and antisocial aspects (#corruption, #discrimination and #inequality), examining these phenomena at both individual and organizational levels. ALL interested are welcome to join the seminar. 🗓 WHEN: Monday 9 December at 11:00-12:00. 📍WHERE: Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS), Høegh-Guldbergs Gade 6B, DK-8000 Aarhus C - Building 1630, room 301 (3rd floor). 🔗https://lnkd.in/d94JDZmB

🤔 How do European tastes for fine cut beef transform Kalahari landscapes? Conversely, how do cattle from the Kalahari Desert play a role in shaping European agricultural and industrial landscapes? In the next AIAS seminar with AIAS Aarhus University Research Foundation Fellow Pierre du Plessis, you can hear about the #socioecological changes that are brought about by preferential #trade agreements that bring large quantities of beef from Botswana and Namibia to Europe. As an environmental anthropologist Pierre du Plessis explores how consumption and trade connect across the Global North and Global South in sometimes unexpected ways. ALL interested are welcome to join the seminar. 🗓 WHEN: Monday 25 November at 11:00-12:00. 📍WHERE: Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS), Høegh-Guldbergs Gade 6B, DK-8000 Aarhus C - Building 1630, room 301 (3rd floor). 🔗https://lnkd.in/dRXXNEui

📚 Appropriate, negotiate, challenge? This is the title of a new book by AIAS Aarhus University Research Foundation Fellow Elisabetta Ferrari, published on University of California Press next week. In her book Elisabetta Ferrari investigates the relationship between #activism and #digital technologies, focusing on how activists think and talk about the role of technology in social change and what this reveals about the #politics of digital technologies. The book is based on a comparative qualitative study, through which Ferrari examined three contemporary leftist movements in Hungary, Italy and the United States This comparative study allows Ferrari to propose a typology of activists’ technological imaginaries based on how they respond to Silicon Valley’s imaginary: imaginaries of appropriation, negotiation or challenge. Her findings suggest that corporate digital technologies seem to limit activist' ability to imagine political and technological alternatives, and to address this Ferrari reinvents how the question of mobilization can be approached. More about the book Appropriate, Negotiate, Challenge. Activist Imaginaries and the Politics of Digital Technologies: https://lnkd.in/d4hZXVBt 📚 On Friday 29 November at 14:00, you are invited to a book launch reception, where Elisabetta Ferrari will present her new book, its framework, key findings and messages. 📆 BOOK LAUNCH: 29 November at 14:00 - 15:00 🔗 REGISTER here (free of charge): https://lnkd.in/dgcXjVE6 📍WHERE: Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS), Høegh-Guldbergs Gade 6B, DK-8000 Aarhus C - Buildings 1630-1632 - the AIAS Hall.
