Ranks of college freshmen are dwindling, research suggests

Freshman enrollment in college is falling, according to a report by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, The 74 reported.

Total freshman enrollment was down 5% last year, in a reversal of the 3.7% uptick reported in fall 2023. Public and private nonprofit four-year institutions are seeing the biggest decreases, down 8.5% and 6.5% respectively. Freshman enrollment is declining across all income levels, with students from middle class neighborhoods seeing the steepest drop — roughly 5% — at public and private four-year institutions.

Jeremy Cohen, a research associate at the clearinghouse and one of the report’s authors, noted that a number of factors may be affecting freshman enrollment.

“We can’t tell you how much of each headwind is the driving force behind each trend, but we can point to some factors that may be influencing some of the declines,” said Cohen, The 74 reported. “One of the longer-term headwinds has to do with the demographic shifts in the country. We’re not quite to the point where the size of the high school graduating class is declining, but that’s expected to hit after 2025.”
