  • ♻It is crystal clear that the current plastics industry, based on linear production and consumption, will not be able to meet the agreed climate and sustainable development goals. We inevitably need a transition to a circular economy based predominantly on non-fossil raw materials. So what next? 👨🔬As of this year, our researchers, led by Lauri Vares, Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry, will explore the possibilities of obtaining novel bio-derived polymers from lignocellulosic biomass amidst the project „Smartly designed chemically recyclable high-performance polymers via photocyclization of bioderived building blocks“ to broaden the possibilities for their deployment. 🔬What will be the main challenges for researchers? A common problem with bio-derived polymers is poor temperature tolerance and strength, which our researchers try to overcome by synthesizing structurally rigid polycyclic monomers. Such polymers are hard to achieve from bio-sources in a viable manner. The polymers will be designed to degrade under controlled conditions, thus enabling chemical recycling/upcycling. The toxicity of the new polymers will also be evaluated to avoid negative environmental consequences in the future. 🧪These novel bio-derived polymers can be used in applications with strict property demands, such as engineering plastics, coatings or packaging. The results obtained will open the way for the introduction of lignocellulosic raw materials and the production of novel natural plastics. The realization of the project will facilitate the transition into a sustainable chemical industry. Read more about the noteworthy mission and research topics of Associate Professor Lauri Vares!👇

  • 🎆The new year has already started to bring exciting challenges for our researchers. Bacterial infections are a growing threat to human health. While current treatments of bacterial infections rely largely on antibiotics, our antibiotic arsenals are eroding due to rapid spread of antimicrobial resistance. 👨🔬Thus, our Professor of Antimicrobial Technologies Tanel Tenson, Associate Professors of Molecular Biology Niilo Kaldalu and Vasili Hauryliuk, Research Fellow in Molecular Microbiology Toomas Mets, and aspiring junior researchers and students have started working on a new project "New Tools for Developing Antibacterial Therapeutics". 🧫Our scientists aim to characterize new antibiotic resistance mechanisms and candidates. The focus will be on inhibitors of protein synthesis, one of the major groups of antibiotics. They also plan to find better options for treating biofilms and intracellular infections. As alternatives to antibiotics, the scientists will attempt to develop better options for phage therapy, by investigating how bacteria and phages functionally and evolutionary interact. 🔎Find out more about professor Tenson and his research group: https://lnkd.in/daPeyUF6
