It has been a dynamic and eventful week since the EMGF hosted the EmpowerMed Women kickoff reception. Yet, the impact of that evening remains strong, reflecting our shared dedication to #empowering #women in the #energy sector. The event featured keynote speeches from H.E. Cypriot Minister George Papanastasiou and H.E. Egyptian Deputy Minister Sabah Mashaly, reaffirming leadership support for this vital initiative. A presentation on EmpowerMed Women’s vision and objectives set the stage for future action, followed by an interactive discussion led by H.E. Greek Deputy Minister and network chair Alexandra Sdoukou , sparking valuable insights and #collaboration. On the sidelines of EGYPES - Egypt Energy Show in Cairo, the EmpowerMed Women network—an initiative by East Mediterranean Gas Forum - EMGF — was officially launched, marking a major step toward gender equality and leadership opportunities for #WomenInEnergy in the East Med and beyond. The initiative was led by H.E. Mr.Osama Mobarez , the Secretary General of EMGF , H.E. Mrs Alexandra Sdoukou - Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy , Greece and my beloved collegue and lifetime friend Enas Shabana - communications and media relations specialist at EMGF . EMGF SG Osama Mobarez met with Karim El-Dessouky, Vice President & Regional Manager for Egypt & East Med at Bechtel and GIAC Vice Chairman, to discuss key topics on the EMGF GIAC agenda. The meeting focused on aligning the GIAC working plan, identifying strategic priorities, and enhancing collaboration among stakeholders to drive impactful initiatives. Discussions also covered opportunities for accelerating project implementation, fostering innovation, and ensuring that GIAC’s objectives align with the region’s evolving energy landscape.

It was truly humbling to be asked to join the Executive Committee of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum - EMGF EmpowerMed Women Network. It felt amazing to return to my home industry #Energy where my career journey began. Attending the inaugural event of this remarkable network was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old colleagues and mentors who have been instrumental in my growth and learning journey. It was also truly heartening to see so many male colleagues joining to support us as allies. I am looking forward to driving impact and paying it forward by encouraging more women and girls to join and thrive in the energy industry. Let's empower each other and make a difference together! During the session, the EMGF SG Osama Mobarez emphasized the critical need for #collaboration among all stakeholders—governments, the private sector, regulators, international organizations, and technology providers—to drive the advancement of emissions removal technologies. He also underscored EMGF’s unique #convening #power in bringing these stakeholders together, fostering meaningful dialogue, ensuring alignment, and facilitating #partnerships that support governments in achieving their emissions reduction goals while complementing, rather than replacing, their role.

“I think the energy sector has been, unfortunately, characterized for very long for significant gender imbalance.
