Extended Training Program on Advanced Economic Evaluation and Health Technology Assessment in Cairo Syreon Middle East is pleased to collaborate with World Health Organization Egypt Office and Egyptian governmental organizations in leading a Capacity Building Program, which serves as the cornerstone for Health Technology Assessment (HTA) in Egypt. Today marks the successful completion of the second module, bringing us closer to developing skilled professionals who will drive HTA in the Egyptian healthcare system. This year-long program encompasses 40 full days of face-to-face training, online sessions, and group projects, organized into five targeted modules. Each module combines solid theoretical foundations with a strong focus on hands-on practice, deeply engaging participants in pharmacoeconomic modeling and key domains of health economics. Through this initiative, participants are gaining the skills to critically appraise, conduct, and apply cost-effectiveness studies and HTA to strengthen evidence-based healthcare decision-making in Egypt. We are pleased to announce the publication of our latest study: "Cost effectiveness threshold in the United Arab Emirates" A cost-effectiveness threshold (CET) is a benchmark used in health economics to determine whether a healthcare intervention (such as a drug, treatment, or medical device) offers good value for the resources it consumes. It represents the maximum amount a healthcare system is willing to pay for one additional unit of health benefit, typically measured as a quality-adjusted life year (QALY). It was a collaborative consensus: The study employed a multi-tiered methodology, including literature reviews, expert panels, and structured voting sessions to ensure comprehensive stakeholder involvement. This comprehensive research, co-authored by Dr. Sara Al Dallal Mohamed Farghaly Sahar Fahmy Khalid Alnaqbi, MD MSc, CCD, FRCPC, FACP, FACR @Wael Al Naeem Mouza Al Saadi Marleine Bejjani Moukarzel Ahmad Fasseeh Nada Korra Sherif Abaza ,MBA Zoltán Kaló, provides key insights into the establishment of cost-effectiveness thresholds (CETs) for health technologies in the UAE. Key Highlights: - Baseline CET Linked to GDP: A baseline of 0.75 times the GDP per capita for one quality-adjusted life year (QALY) was established, ensuring the CET reflects the UAE’s economic status. - Multiplier System: A dynamic system was introduced, applying higher multipliers for disease rarity (up to 3X), severity (up to 3X), and health gain (up to 2X) to capture societal values. - Future-Oriented Framework: The CET will undergo periodic reviews to remain responsive to the evolving healthcare landscape, promoting sustainable decision-making. This framework represents a major step forward in aligning UAE healthcare practices with global standards, ensuring guidance of UAE policymakers in allocating healthcare resources efficiently, ensuring that health technologies deliver maximum value to patients and society. Introducing Our New CET Calculation Tool: We are also proud to announce the launch of a new tool that automatically calculates the CET. 📣 New publication by Syreon ! We're excited to share our latest publication written in collaboration with experts at Syreon Research Institute on the hidden burden of atopic dermatitis (AD) in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. The study, co-authored by Baher ElEzbawy, Zoltán Kaló, Ahmad Fasseeh, András Inotai, Bertalan Németh & Tamas Agh sheds light on the significant yet often overlooked impact of AD, not just on quality of life, but also on productivity and economic resources. Key findings of the study include: The hidden burden of AD varies significantly across the CEE region, contributing up to 0.43% of GDP in some countries. Annually, quality-adjusted life year (QALY) losses due to AD in these countries range between 1,800 to 59,000, resulting in economic impacts of 38 million to 1 billion Euros. The indirect costs, such as productivity losses from absenteeism and presenteeism, amount to 3.6 to 148.9 million Euros per country each year. These findings emphasize that the impact of AD goes beyond the visible symptoms and direct medical costs. Addressing this hidden burden is crucial for enhancing decision-making and prioritizing resources that could significantly improve the quality of life for patients. This research aims to provide healthcare officials and policymakers with the insights needed to make evidence-based decisions regarding the management of AD in the region. This collaborative effort outlines the current status and future directions for HTA implementation in Algeria, addressing critical gaps and proposing strategic actions for a sustainable and effective healthcare system. Key highlights of the study: -Analysis of the current HTA environment in Algeria, identifying strengths and areas for improvement. -Recommendations for capacity building, including expanding the postgraduate HTA training programs. -Proposals for sustainable HTA funding mechanisms, involving both public and private sectors. -Emphasis on the need for local HTA evidence generation and the integration of multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) in policy decisions. -Strategies for enhancing the quality and transparency of HTA processes.
