The UK’s cycling sector has gathered to launch E-Bike Positive, a major new safety campaign

The UK cycling sector has launched its largest-ever campaign to address ebike battery safety. Named “E-Bike Positive,” this new initiative is boosting consumer confidence by tackling misinformation and promoting the benefits of ebikes.

The campaign is a direct response to rising safety concerns, stoked by negative press.

A recent survey shows that fears over battery fires are deterring 23% of UK adults from purchasing ebikes. Additionally, 25% worry about the safety of charging their bike near them.

E-Bike Positive is countering these concerns by highlighting the advantages of ebikes, such as improved health, reduced carbon emissions, and cost savings. Despite these benefits, safety worries remain a significant barrier for potential buyers. In response, a new assurance scheme will help consumers identify reputable ebike brands that adhere to stringent safety standards.

Sarah McMonagle, Director of External Affairs, Cycling UK, said:

“Like traditional pedal cycles, e-cycles boost physical and mental health, improve air quality, and reduce carbon emissions. They’re a great option for people who cycle in a hilly area, experience mobility challenges, carry children or shopping, or simply don’t want to get sweaty on their commute.”

Over 100 local bike shops have committed to selling only UK-approved, safety-tested ebikes. The initiative also offers educational materials, including battery safety guides and independent advice for both consumers and sellers. A remarkable 64% of respondents said that increased education would help their confidence with ebikes.

Sarah McMonagle continued:

“When purchased from reputable manufacturers e-cycles are very safe. That’s why we’re supporting this education campaign alongside Cycling UK’s ongoing calls for the UK government to make e-cycles more accessible.”

The upcoming EBIKE SUMMIT, returning to Oxford on the 20th of September, will gather the leading ebike businesses and names to uncover how the sector can better overcome these uncertainties.
