[edit]Derived by syncope from early Ancient Greek Διϝωνη (Diwōnē), from Proto-Indo-European *DiwHóneh₂ (“one under authority of Zeus or heaven”), from *dyew- + *-Hō. Compare Old Latin Dīvāna, Latin Diāna, from a shared root whence may have also developed Latin Iūnō, Iūnōnis.
