Creating a space that’s both beautiful and functional is always a challenge. Features like ramps, elevators, and wide doorways can be difficult to integrate seamlessly, but accessibility is about long-term usability. Buildings last generations, and it’s easier and more cost-effective to plan for accessibility from the start. Wide doorways are a growing trend, while ramps may not seem necessary now but can be crucial in the future. Including space for future accessibility needs makes retrofitting easier and future-proofs the design, showing clients that accessibility is a smart, forward-thinking choice.

Accessibility should be defined in steps of importance, explaining why it is necessary. When convincing clients, I try to understand their perspective. The function of the space matters; for instance, accessibility needs for a cozy villa for two differ from those of a bustling department store that must be welcoming and inclusive.

In one of my recent projects, I demonstrated the value of accessibility by linking it directly to enhanced user engagement and business growth. I presented case studies showing how accessible designs expand user bases, particularly among underserved markets, increasing revenue opportunities. This knowledgeable and compassionate approach ensures that clients understand the need of prioritising accessibility features.

In my experience, convincing clients to prioritize accessibility starts with connecting it to their goals.
