Another work using NeoMag! This time for characterizing solvent diffusion processes in soft biological magneto-active hydrogels!

Experimental and computational insights into diffusion processes in biological magneto-active hydrogels just published in JMPS! Great work with Jorge Gonzalez-Rico Sara Garzon Hernandez and Chad Landis European Research Council (ERC) Universidad Carlos III de Madrid We provide an ultra soft magneto active hydrogel (only 20 Pa stiffness!) and demonstrate important stiffness changes linked to microstructural particles rearrangements. Then we developed an experimental setup to control magnetic actuation and obtain quantitative measurements of solvent diffusion processes. Finally we implemented a computational to model the coupled magnetic, mechanical and two-species solvent diffusion processes in soft active materials. https://lnkd.in/dKhmmhwu

60Nd ha compartido esto
New paper in #AdvancedMaterials on astrocyte mechanics, calcium and cytoskeleton dynamics under substrate deformation, magneto-mechanical actuation, magnetic tweezers, Piezo1 and more! This is the result of the work during last years in the 4D-BIOMAP (ERC StG) and ISBIOMECH (ERC PoC) projects European Research Council (ERC), thanks to the collaboration between Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Instituto Cajal, CSIC and Imperial College London https://lnkd.in/dwGsT9eD We introduce #NeoMag system to open new possibilities in the mechanobiology field through soft magneto-active materials. The system allows for nanoindentation tests on cells and confocal microscopy under different substrate deformation scenarios. We also demonstrate the capability of the system to evaluate functional responses (calcium dynamics here) on astrocytes subjected to different mechanical loading scenarios. We then used magnetic tweezers to identify Piezo1 as one of the major contributors to the alterations in the mechano-functional response of astrocytes, evaluating the influence of actin network structure on Piezo1 activity. Finally, we show how the system can be extended to evaluate mechano-functional responses in 3D cultures, presenting similar results as those shown in astrocytes on 2D substrates. The system and substrate materials will be commercialised soon by 60Nd S.L.!
