The lack of proper planning often results in delays, miscommunication, and financial setbacks. In this series, we’ll explore how inadequate approvals, funding issues, and poor communication contribute to rising refit costs, and how to mitigate these risks. One major factor that can derail a refit project is the failure to secure necessary approvals in advance. Without these sign-offs, projects are frequently delayed, leading to unnecessary costs and disruption. Addressing approvals early ensures smoother project flow and prevents costly rework. When converting your yacht from cruising polar conditions to tropical, recalibrating onboard systems, particularly HVAC and plumbing, is essential. In a shipyard setting, engineers should begin by testing and overhauling the air conditioning plant. Chillers, air handlers, and ducting will likely have experienced minimal use during polar cruising but will need to handle significant demand in tropical environments. Pressure testing of the system can reveal any leaks or weaknesses that may have developed during cold weather operations. Compressors and refrigerants should be inspected, and any glycol-based heating loops used in cold climates can be bypassed or repurposed to enhance cooling efficiency. Plumbing systems should be descaled and flushed to remove any ice or mineral build-up that might have formed in low temperatures. Pipe insulation suitable for cold climates may not be necessary, and in warmer environments, insulation may be more focused on preventing condensation. Watermakers should undergo a complete service, with membranes replaced or cleaned to ensure maximum output in warmer seas where biofouling in the desalination process is more prevalent. Engineers should also assess tank coatings for corrosion and any micro-cracks that could worsen under heat expansion.
