Record aluminium recycling levels achieved! Aluminium beverage can recycling reached an all-time high of 580,000 tonnes, resulting in a savings of 5.4 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.  The latest EU beverage can recycling rates for 2022 showcase the industry’s commitment to sustainability and the circular economy. We continue to push for higher recycling rates at the European level, demonstrating significant progress on the path to 100% circularity by 2050. 📈  However, the evidence is clear: without improved Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) systems and an increase in Deposit Return Systems (DRS), many EU Member States will struggle to achieve recycling rates of 90% or more. In the latest edition of Aluminium International Today, we take a closer look at the remarkable progress Europe’s aluminium industry has made in sustainability. The magazine features an article on our latest Environmental Profile Report, with insights from our Director Industry & Market Intelligence Djibril RENE and our Sustainability Officer Sanaa Zinbi.    Our report highlights a 60% lower carbon footprint for primary aluminium production in Europe compared to the global average, with 86% of production powered by low-carbon electricity. European Aluminium, the voice of the entire European aluminium value chain, expresses deep concern over the 25% tariff on all aluminium imports to the U.S. This decision risks disrupting transatlantic trade relations and harming global supply chains. 🚨 The EU is an exporter of aluminium products to the U.S., with 309,000 tonnes worth €2.4 billion exported from January to November 2024. The main exports include: 📌 Aluminium sheets (43%) 📌 Aluminium foil (19%) 📌 Aluminium bars/rods (10%) These tariffs could significantly reduce trade volumes, strain long-standing commercial relationships, and impact industries reliant on aluminium, further destabilising a sector already under pressure. European Aluminium urges the European Commission to engage in immediate dialogue with U.S. counterparts to seek a resolution that protects the interests of the European aluminium industry. 🛡️ "We’re ready to work with all stakeholders to find a constructive path forward that supports fair trade practices and minimises harm to our industry and supply chains.
