💰 It’s the final month of the year already and, per our funding tracking, Barcelona startups have already raised nearly €700M this quarter – a massive increase compared to 2023’s *full* Q4 total of €93M! We put out a poll asking what you thought was behind this spike, and here are the results: 🚀 The majority (41.1%) put it down to the maturing ecosystem – as per an ACCIÓ report we analyzed previously, the number of startups in Catalonia almost doubled between 2016 & 2023. This week, we take a look into the Catalonia-based stats from South Summit's new report, Entrepreneurship Map 2024 🔎 💭 Interesting findings overall that show the ecosystem’s strengths and where progress is needed: 📈 Catalonia leads in scaling companies, with 23% of startups now in scaleup stages—slightly ahead of the national average by 3%. 👩💻 Job creation also stands out, with 62% of Catalan startups planning to grow their teams. Maturity-wise, only 19% have been operating for 5+ years (4% less than the Spanish average) with most operating between 2 and 4 years (53%). 💰 On profitability: Mixed. While 17% report positive EBITDA, 25% expect to reach profitability within a year. Innovation is also a solid strength: 33% of Catalan startups leverage AI and 25% have registered patents, both above Spain’s norm. ⚖️ Consistency seems to define: 60% are serial entrepreneurs, and Catalonia leads in successful exits, with 47% having previously sold a company. Yet (wait for it), the region maintains an 80/20 ratio for male and female founders, a figure that has not changed in over a decade. Salvador Aragón, CIO of IE Business School, comments: “[The Catalan ecosystem’s] areas of improvement lie in generating a greater diversity of startups that allow us to overcome the growth limitations of the current model and incorporate women into the entrepreneurial ecosystem”. Barcelona startup funding: Q3 💰 Every quarter, we break down all the BCN-based rounds we’ve tracked through the newsletter. This Q3 was a bit of a rollercoaster: 🔹 Barcelona’s total for Q3 was €229.8M, over 29 rounds. That’s 33% of Spain’s total of €705.4M, but still a solid outcome 💪 historically (2023’s Q3 total was €261.5M)—even if heavily dependent on a few big deals in July, like Exoticca’s €60M debt funding from BBVA Spark and Wallbox Chargers’ €40M+. 🔹 July led with a spike 📈 of €155M across 19 rounds, suggesting several large deals were likely closed before the Spanish August slowdown. The number of rounds was also good, tying with February as the most active month for deal flow this year. 🔹 Biotech & healthtech 🧪 were the most funded industries in Q3 (over 42% of BCN startups fell into these categories), followed by fintech, foodtech, proptech, and mobility.
