Founder & CEO Senken | Expert in Carbon Markets and Corporate Sustainability | Driving Net-Zero Goals & Climate Action Investment
Did you see the news? 🚨 This is a BIG DEAL! The EU has approved the CRCF (Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming) Regulation! This voluntary framework sets a new gold standard for how we approach carbon dioxide removal (CDR). What does this mean? Well, it will be the first EU-wide framework for certifying carbon removals, carbon farming, and carbon storage in products. This is a big move in the right direction for the EU! 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲: 1. A Broader Scope for Certified Removals The CRCF covers a wide range of activities, from permanent carbon storage through technologies like BECCS and DACCS, to temporary carbon farming methods such as restoring wetlands or improving soil health. 🌱 2. A Common EU Registry for Transparency By 2028, an EU-wide registry will provide public access to certified units, audit summaries, and compliance records. 🤝 This level of traceability can only build trust for buyers and stakeholders, ensuring every tonne of CO2 is accounted for. 3. Independent Audits and Accountability Operators must undergo regular audits and adhere to strict monitoring rules to maintain certification. 🤝 For voluntary carbon market players, this raises the bar for trust and transparency. 4. Synergies with EU Policies The CRCF aligns with EU climate neutrality goals and integrates with agricultural policies to support farmers in adopting carbon-friendly practices. 🤝 This creates opportunities for companies to invest in high-quality local projects that deliver co-benefits like improved biodiversity. 5. Rigorous Certification Standards The CRCF is built on the QU.A.L.ITY criteria: - Quantification: Measurable carbon benefits. - Additionality: Projects must go beyond existing obligations. - Long-Term Storage: Carbon must stay stored for decades, if not centuries. - Sustainability: Projects must support biodiversity and avoid environmental harm. 🤝 For corporate buyers, this means a reliable benchmark for ensuring their credits deliver meaningful results. 6. A Focus on High-Quality Carbon Credits The exclusion of avoided emissions and fossil-fuel-related projects ensures the CRCF focuses on genuine removals, not shortcuts. 🤝 For corporate buyers, this is a clear signal to prioritise high-integrity removal carbon credits. While the EU Green Deal laid the groundwork for achieving net zero by 2050, it overlooked one critical piece: CDR. Without integrating carbon removal into key policies, scaling decarbonisation becomes significantly harder. 💬 What are your thoughts on the impact of the CRCF’s approval? Your opinions are always appreciated!

The Biden-Harris administration released a new interagency report, Building a Vibrant Domestic Biomanufacturing Ecosystem, to advance biotechnology and biomanufacturing as part of a broader national bioeconomy implementation plan. Developed by the Biomanufacturing Interagency Working Group, which includes the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and other federal agencies, this report predicts the U.S. bioeconomy to grow at a rapid pace over the next two decades, adding hundreds of thousands of well-paying jobs across nearly every sector of the economy. Learn how the research and development resources identified in this report will be critical to the U.S. government in guiding these strategic decisions and policies to not only sustain but grow the U.S. bioeconomy. https://lnkd.in/ej8DEega

The Tardigrade's Guide to Hydration All known life depends on liquid water. But tardigrades somehow manage to be able to lose 95% of their water, stay shriveled up and dried out for DECADES and then, with a spritz of water, saunter back off in their microscopic Winnie-the-Pooh ways. How do they do it? Magic. Actually not magic, but chemistry! Two molecular level tools make it possible. First, disordered proteins float around and as the water leaves, they get concentrated and fit together in a rambly, jumbled way that forms a protective matrix around the more delicate proteins necessary for life to function—this locks them up, preventing them from breaking down, and keeping them fresh and ready to function when water returns. The other bit of magic—err, chemistry—is trehalose. This is a sugar that serves a similar function on a larger scale, forming a protective shield around cellular structures, keeping them from collapsing and being torn apart during the drying process. Together, these molecular tools keep everything inside a dried out tardigrade safe and ready to roll when water gets absorbed back in, and life’s dynamic processes can begin again. We’ll leave you to contemplate what kind of mental state these animals experience during all of that. 🚀 After 10 years as an EU grant-writing expert, supporting countless organisations to achieve their innovation goals, I’m thrilled to share a career milestone: leading my own EU project as a coordinator in PNO Innovation (Spain)! 🎉 Today, we launch ToBeReaL: Empowering bioeconomy projects through Technical, Business, Regulatory, and Social assistance services. This project, submitted under HORIZON-CL6-2024-CircBio-01-8, marks a new chapter for the entire bioeconomy sector in Europe. 🌍 A big thank you to the PNO Innovation (Portugal) colleagues – Mariana Cerqueira, Joana Moreira-Silva, Filipa Tomé, who supported me to prepare the proposal, – and our extraordinary consortium partners, each bringing vast expertise in bioeconomy. Together, we’re joined by 6 leading bioeconomy clusters (Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Štajerska, CluBE-Cluster of Bioeconomy and Environment of Western Macedonia, BioFuel Region, Fondazione Agrifood & Bioeconomy FVG, Bioeconomy For Change, and Bioeconomy Cluster), 3 renowned Technological Centres (AINIA, ILVO (Instituut voor Landbouw, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek), VITO), and 4 SMEs excelling in funding, scale-up, and market development (PNO Innovation (Spain), PNO Innovation (Portugal), Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, NNFCC The Bioeconomy Consultants). This powerful partnership is set to drive impactful change. 🌱💼 ToBeReaL’s mission: supporting bioeconomy initiatives across different stages of maturity with a unique focus on technical, business, regulatory, and social innovation, especially in regions where the bioeconomy is emerging. Our collaborative approach will empower stakeholders, promote knowledge exchange, and foster a connected, sustainable bioeconomy ecosystem. 📅 In May 2025, ToBeReaL’s support services will be available to all bioeconomy actors in Europe! Stay tuned for this incredible opportunity. #EUProjects #Bioeconomy #Innovation #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #ToBeReaL

🌍#Nitrogen is critical to producing enough #protein for the world population. But we have already used more nitrogen than the planet can bear🌾 🐮 In a new BIO4Africa video, Johan Sanders from Grassa | Unlocking the full potential of Grass | Biomass explains three co-enablers of circular nitrogen use: ☘️ The green biorefinery ☘️ Nitrogen-binding crops ☘️ Recycling of livestock manure “Grazing cattle can only extract 75% of the protein in grass and green leaves. The biorefinery unlocks 100% of the protein content - converting it into storable high-quality protein products for animal feed,” says Johan. BIO4Africa is testing the green biorefinery at pilot sites in #Uganda and #Ghana.
