Last Monday, I, together with four Portuguese and Brazilian scientists, from Donostia and Pamplona, went to two schools in Pamplona, Navarra, to host a Native Scientists workshop. The goal of these workshops was to show to the 10- to 12-year-old students different fields of science in a dynamic way but also in a common language both the scientists and the children share, Portuguese. These workshops were the first ones ever hosted in Spain within the Same Migrant Community Programme of Native Scientists and in total 42 children got to enjoy them! The workshop was coordinated by me and had the presence of the scientists Madalena V. Gamboa , from CIC nanoGUNE, Liliana Teixeira, from CIC biomaGUNE, Francisca Matias, from BCBL, and Emilia Chuina Tomazeli a doctorate from the Universidad Pública de Navarra. The Portuguese teacher of this students, Daniela Teles, also Portuguese, was present and was essential to realise these workshops. This initiative had the support of Camões - Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua, I.P., and also of the respective research centres of the scientists. Thank you so much to all the scientists that accepted my invitation, to Daniela for welcoming us so well, to the children for their wonderful interest that inspires us to continue doing science, and to Native Scientists for their work and for having me join as a coordinator of Portuguese in Spain. Let's hope the future brings more amazing workshops just as these! 😄 #outreach #sciencecommunication #workshops #children #virus #bacterias #brain #atoms

🌟 Research Highlight🌟 Title: Design and optimization of an electrochemical sensor based on carbon nanotubes for the reliable voltammetric detection of serotonin in complex biological fluids. We are excited to share a significant advancement in the development of electrochemical sensors for serotonin detection in complex biological fluids! This innovative research presents the design and optimization of a voltammetric sensor based on multiwall carbon nanotubes modified with ligand-free gold nanoparticles. The sensor demonstrates excellent sensitivity and antifouling properties, enabling reliable serotonin detection even in challenging environments like plasma. 💡 Why is this important? Serotonin levels in peripheral biological fluids are linked to various pathologies and provide crucial insights into mental and physical health. This portable, rapid, and robust sensor addresses a key challenge: maintaining stability and functionality in biofluid-rich environments, where electrode fouling often hinders performance. 🔬 Key Features of the Sensor: Enhanced Sensitivity: Achieved through ligand-free gold nanoparticles that catalyze serotonin oxidation. Selectivity and Antifouling Properties: Thanks to a thin layer of molecular imprinted polymer. Real-Time, In Situ Detection: Optimized using differential pulsed voltammetry and adsorptive stripping for pre-accumulation of serotonin.
