FIRST prize ! We are building a timber planetarium with our friends at Taller d'Arquitectura a les Golfes, sccl Our “Meteor” proposal for the new planetarium of the Centre de Divulgació de Paleontologia of La Canonja is a sublime timber sphere-in-a-sphere with the three clear intentions of perfectly hosting its function, highlighting and maximizing the preexisting surroundings, and promoting sustainability in public buildings. The planetarium, enveloped in an iridescent metal skin resembling insect ommatidia, provides ventilation and a captivating interplay of sky and landscape reflections. Hidden constellations on the facade will intrigue astronomers and enthusiasts. Seamlessly blending into the Mas de l’Hort de l’Abeurador garden, it embraces the pond, perimeter wall, and plantations, resonating with the orchard environment. Nestled in a slight depression, it creates an intimate space that connects with the access hall, enriching the museum experience with integrated water paths and staying spaces amidst the garden's greenery. Very happy to share our last timber shell together with Urbanitree and Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia for South Summit The Summit structure is an urban oasis that hosts exhibitors and events during the South Summit festival in Plaza de España in Madrid. It consists of a continuous doubly curved shell supported by various funnels. This shell is discretised into elastically bent strips of birch plywood and connected by metal plates. The result is a lightweight, breathable and durable structural timber fabric. The overall shape of Summit is intended to provide a continuous perimeter opening, inviting visitors to explore this "urban forest" of wooden columns. Upon entering, one can enjoy a cool space, protected from the sun, with filtered light and dynamic shadows created by the suspended timber pieces. To achieve this, a digital anti-functional dynamic relaxation technique was used, ensuring that the curvature did not exceed the maximum allowable by the thin 12mm thickness of the bent-in-situ strips. The surface was streamlined to be constructible with as little waste as possible, producing quasi-straight strips of constant width. The negative curvature of the surface generated a continuum of bifurcations in the strips, similar to the organic growth patterns of corals or cacti, allowing constant widths to be maintained as they approach a perimeter of much greater length than the bases of the structure. The strips were then segmented into optimised lengths to be fabricated into standard plywood boards, making them easy to transport and assemble. The joints are designed so that they can be assembled entirely from below, simply using conventional scaffolding and metric joints. The structure was erected in 2 days and dismantled in 1 day. CODA Computational Design Affairs S.C.P. is proud to share that our timber shell "El cielo de Vueling" has been awarded as the best stand at International Tourism Fair FITUR MADRID 2024, among 9000 other companies stands. A project by Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, designed, engineered and built by CODA Computational Design Affairs S.C.P. together with Urbanitree, for Vueling Airlines "El cielo de Vueling" is the timber shell formed by the Vueling network. The geodesic paths over the world's spherical cap are mapped to a 6m sphere and then rationalized into planar n-gons. This design not only optimises numerical fabrication and assembly for easy installation, but also ensures the complete recovery of the elements for future assemblies, thus avoiding the traditional generation of waste in exhibition architecture. More than a structure, the Vueling dome is built as a living representation of the more than 300 routes and 100 cities in which it operates. Each geodesic curve drawn in the sky tells a story of connections and encounters, highlighting the very essence of travel. images by IMAGEN SUBLIMINAL SL Miguel De Guzman
