Enhancing the autonomy and understanding of robots for improved flexibility, resilience, and trust in open environments
Sobre nosotros
Coresense is a Horizon Europe funded project that aims to develop a cognitive architecture for autonomous robots. The project will provide a solution to the challenges of reliability, resilience, and trust in autonomous robots by creating a theory of understanding and awareness and reusable software assets. The project will demonstrate its capability in augmenting the resilience of drone teams, the flexibility of manufacturing robots, and the human alignment of social robots. The goal is to improve the capability of autonomous robots to understand their open environments and complex missions, leading to improved flexibility, resilience, and explainability.

Irish Manufacturing Research, as the leader of Work Package 6 "Agile Manufacturing Testbed", is creating a dynamic demonstration environment to explore flexible grasping and manipulation of manufactured parts. ➡️ The goal is to inform the requirements of the #CoreSense cognitive architecture and evaluate and test its capabilities. ➡️ The focus is on enabling manufacturing robots to leverage models to enhance their situational understanding, agility, and adaptability. This work aligns with CoreSense’s overarching goal to augment robot flexibility and autonomy, directly addressing the challenges of modern, customizable manufacturing environments. #HorizonEurope #AI #Robots #Robotics #Autonomy #AutonomousRobots #Architecture #Awareness #Testbed

Showcasing our capabilities on mobile inspection robots at the “Robots in Business” event at RoboHouse! 🦾 Since we love to challenge ourselves, we are combining and integrating two technologies, to accomplish more added value to the industry. Mobile inspection of large parts is a need and it saves the time you would spend on dismantling the parts 🕙 ⬇️. The results are promising, explains technical lead Aashish Vatsyayan: “Basically, we are teaching a robot to detect the slightest defect. Our system is very flexible and we can change the sensors based on the application. First, the mobile system navigates to the part that needs inspection. Then we perform an initial scan using machine learning to detect defects or scratches. Traditionally, this is done manually. The second step involves using a sensor to perform a more detailed inspection on the defects. The inspection can be performed on the surface or sub-surface, depending on the sensors used. In this demo we are using a laser line scanner to perform a surface inspection”. Compared to the current visual inspection 👁️ by humans, this system is expected to be faster and more accurate 🔍 in future, and way easier to configure than the current damage scanning solutions. Beside our scanning airplanes for damages, we are exploring possibilities for other industries. During the event, we connected to several businesses that showed interest. Think of automated scanning of the quality of train rails on a regular basis, to plan preventive maintenance before severe damaging occurs 🚆. Or scanning concrete structures for the smallest cracks, not visible to human eye 🏗️. This is relevant for high pressure labs, nuclear and other chemical plants where safety should be guaranteed to the highlest level. Inspecting large vessels as soon as they enter the harbour is another application where multi-sensor mobile inspection can be a valuable addition 🚢. A big thank you to our Robotics Software Engineers that worked really hard to have the demo ready in time! Nikhil Sethi and Quang Nguyen worked on the laser line scanner, the sensor and how to get reliable data. Nithish Kumar did great stuff to have the mobile manipulator move precisely and autonomously. Special mention of our consultant Raul Montalvo de Roa, who has been collaborating with us for months to achieve this milestone. Data in Brief has recently published a paper detailing a dataset collected during the RoboCup 2023 and 2024 competitions using the TIAGo robot. This dataset includes ROSbag files with the robot's sensor data and external videos documenting the tests, which can be particularly useful for the ROS community for improving perception and planning models and understanding human-robot interaction in real contexts. Additionally, this dataset plays a crucial role in evaluating and testing developments from #CoreSense within the social robotics testbed. Let's introduce Esther Aguado González 👋 Her main work at #Coresense involves researching solutions for reusable adaptation strategies in autonomous systems, enabling robots to reason about themselves and reconfigure their own control processes if necessary. This includes developing robust adaptation strategies from an architectural perspective and using ontologies to specify formal knowledge about both the system and the mission. “My focus is mainly on the theoretical foundation (…). However, we continuously ground and evaluate our progress through the three testbeds, each providing a unique set of cases and characteristics,” she states. She believes that this balance of theory and application presents a powerful opportunity for meaningful advancements in adaptive and autonomous systems. #HorizonEurope #Robots #Robotics #ROS #AutonomousRobots #Software #Theory #Ontology #AI #Team Universidad Politécnica de Madrid Irish Manufacturing Research

Although autonomous robots can execute complex tasks in dynamic environments, unresolved challenges in reliability and trust pose significant risks. 🤖 In our latest article, we summarize prominent and recent studies that employ knowledge-based methods to enhance robot autonomy. One of the main goals is to conduct a systematic analysis of recent and relevant projects that use ontologies for autonomous robots. 📚🔍 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dHWHYAYZ A big thank you to the correspondence author Esther Aguado González (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid). #Coresense #HorizonEurope #Robots #Robotics #Awareness #Ontologies #AI #ROS #Software
