Common mode refers to signals or noise that flow in the same direction in a pair of lines, while differential mode refers to signals or noise that flow in opposite directions. For example, if you have a pair of copper wires wound around a ring-shaped ferrite core, common mode currents flow into the wires in the same direction, creating a magnetic field that adds together. Differential mode currents flow in opposite directions, and the magnetic fields cancel each other out.
