The European Union (EU) is a unique economic and political partnership between 27 democratic European countries that are working together to improve the lives of their citizens. It has delivered half a century of peace, stability and prosperity, helped raise living standards, and is progressively building a single Europe-wide market in which people, goods, services and capital move among Member States as freely as within a country. With more than 500 million inhabitants, which account for one quarter of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP) and one fifth of worldwide trade, the EU is a global player. It is now the largest economy and the largest exporter and importer of goods and services in the world. More than twenty years ago, EU Member States agreed to create a Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). This enables the EU to speak and act as one in world affairs. In an international and globalised world, the 27 countries that make up the EU have greater weight and influence when they act together as the European Union, rather than as 27 individual nations. The Government of Kenya and the EU have enjoyed a long-standing partnership for over four decades. The first formal link between the EU and Kenya was forged back in 1968 at Arusha when the East African Community signed the Arusha Convention establishing trade relations between the then three EAC partner states (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda) and the then European Community. At the start of the EU-Kenya Partnership, the main emphasis was on providing technical and financial aid to rural development and food production, development of hydro-electric power, development of feeder roads as well as training and development of technical education facilities. Today, thanks to the provision of duty free, quota free access into the EU market for goods originating from Kenya, trade is now the centrepiece of EU-Kenya relations.

#MotivationMonday How can Kenyan entrepreneurs access the EU market ? The EU-Kenya EPA is designed to foster mutually beneficial trade and investment. It is aligned with Kenya’s sustainable development goals, aiming to create new economic opportunities and support resilient growth. Through trade-related initiatives, the EPA also contributes to job creation and economic development. Under the agreement, Kenya has committed to gradually liberalize 82.6% of its imports from the EU by value, many of which are already duty-free. This gradual approach gives Kenya the flexibility to maintain tariffs on select goods—including wines, spirits, specific chemicals, and certain agricultural products—to protect and support its local industries. Last week we held a sensitisation forum, where participants explored the goals and benefits of the EPA for Kenyan businesses, including steps to access EU markets, available support programs, and best practices in sustainable trade. The forum also covered the agreement’s provisions related to agriculture, industrialization, and due diligence standards. The EU is committed to continuing its support for these sensitisation workshops across Kenya, helping local businesses gain the tools and knowledge to make the most of the EPA’s benefits and strengthen Kenya-EU trade relations. This week, the sensitization forum will be held in Isiolo. Last week, the EU Delegation to Kenya and stakeholders in Trade and Investment held another sensitisation session addressing the opportunities offered to the private sector by the EU - Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). At the session held in Athi River, the Director of the State Department of Trade, Mr Joseah Rotich, Ministry of Investments, Trade & Industry, noted that the EU-Kenya EPA had provided Kenyan exporters unlimited access to the EU markets. The European Union Ambassador to Kenya Henriette Geiger called on Kenyan entrepreneurs to diversify their exports to the European Union for increased profits. #EUKenyaEPA

Let's discover a bit more about Europe and ourselves: 👵 Longevity legends: 🇪🇸 women top life expectancy with 86.7 years (🇪🇺 84.2), while 🇲🇹 men reach 81.8 years (🇪🇺 78.9). 💼 Gender pay gap: 🇪🇪 has the highest at 21.3%, followed by 🇦🇹 Austria (18.4%). 🇱🇺 has the lowest, with a negative gap of -7%. The 🇪🇺 average is 12.7%. 📚 Language learning: 99.7% of 🇫🇷 pupils study two or more languages, and 7.5% in 🇵🇹.
