The #OceanDecade endorses 9 new Actions that will contribute to enhancing ocean observations and predictions, boosting our understanding of marine ecosystems as well as the resilience of coastal communities. 🌐 From using space imagery to count whales, developing a software for tsunami prediction and making oceanography data accessible to all, these initiatives will help to deliver the science and solutions needed to build a safe and predicted ocean. 🔬 New research led by the ICM reveals the global distribution and diversity of Picozoa, a key marine protist lineage! 🦠Published in Microbiome, this study shows that Picozoa are among the top 10 most abundant eukaryotic groups in the ocean, found almost exclusively in marine environments. The research identifies 179 operational taxonomic units, grouped into five phylogenetic clades. 🧬 🔍All in all, the work advances our understanding of microbial ocean life and highlights the need for species-level ecological studies of heterotrophic flagellates like Picozoa. + info: https://lnkd.in/gC5H6GsP
