Huge congrats to the InsectBiotech team for being recognised for their work to disrupt and transform the Spanish agricultural industry, shaping the way for a circular future. InsectBiotech uses black soldier fly (BSF) larvae to transform agricultural and food waste into valuable products. Their process reduces pollutant emissions and creates fertilizers and biostimulants for regenerative agriculture. Whilst BSF as a enabler of tackling organic waste and generating high protein feedstock and fertiliser isn’t new, it does remain challenging to scale within specific agricultural supply chains. Seems crazy given the amount of available waste that can be repurposed and converted to create sustainable, regenerative agricultural products (and reduce emissions). But agriculture is an old industry, and it requires the right technology, skills and investment to evolve our ways of working. Take the olive growing industry, for example. The Andalucia region of Spain alone creates 4.8m tonnes of olive waste (olive pomace residue, if we want to be technical about it). The largest amount of olive waste produced anywhere in the world, and up until now it’s a signicant source of carbon emissions. For context, food loss and waste account for 8-10% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions – nearly five times the total emissions from the aviation sector. Mind-blowing! InsectBiotech is working with investors and partners to take this waste and repurpose it to create circular solutions to reinvest as regenerative and sustainable inputs into agricultural production systems. In a world where the food industry faces increasing risks and volatility in global supply chains, these actions serve to reduce dependency on synthetic inputs like fertilizers, and create more local, closed loop production supply chains. Lower cost, lower emissions. Win win. InsectBiotech recently won the Málaga AgriTech Award for Best Start-Up, a significant recognition of our recent successful trajectory. Here’s a short video on it.
