We started attending Ocean Business even before IQUA was a reality, as part of the scientific community. To us, OB is one of the best events organized in Europe in our field. #Boreas is a tugboat that served during the WWII. It was sunk on purpose back in 1989 in the #CostaBrava area to become an artificial reef to boost the marine ecosystem and has, in fact, become a diving tourism meeting point. 🎯 New projects ahead 🎯 Last week we participated in the kickoff meeting of #MMinE-SwEEPER project in GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel. The project will advance knowledge, capability and capacity in #Europe for dealing with #marine #munition in the non- military aspect of #UXO-clearance. The outcomes with respect to specific #technical #advancements will include: a) AI-supported detection of munition in hydroacoustic spatial mapping data, b) detection of buried munition objects, c) AI-supported object identification in optical and acoustic cameras and d) implementing trained AI-models into Smart-AUVs and -USVs for adaptive and cooperative mission execution. The project is funded under #HorizonEU and managed by European Research Executive Agency (REA) under the grant agreement 101167839.

European seas, particularly the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and Mediterranean, are home to a significant number of dumped explosive and chemical munitions from World War I and II, as well as the Cold War era. Two new projects have just been launched to enhance knowledge, capability and capacity to mitigate the threats from dumped munitions to Europe’s seas. The projects are: 💣 MMinE-SwEEPER project (Marine Munition in Europe - Solutions with Economic and Ecological Profits for Efficient Remediation), funded under #HorizonEU and managed by European Research Executive Agency (REA). 💣 MUNI-RISK project (Risk assessment of sea-dumped munitions in the Baltic Sea) funded under the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (#EU #EMFAF) and managed by CINEA. The two projects will collaborate on sharing information and best practices to take efforts to deal with marine munitions in Europe to a next level.
