🌿 Collaborating for a more resilient Mediterranean! 🌊 Over the past three days, we’ve engaged in intense and fruitful discussions with our partners at the General Assembly of the DesirMED project, kindly hosted by Generalitat Valenciana. This European projects in Horizon 2020 brings together 34 organizations committed to accelerating climate adaptation and resilience in the Mediterranean region. The IUCN team led a dedicated session showcasing four inspiring case studies on Nature-based Solutions that comply with IUCN standard on NbS: ✅ Network Grazing ("Pastoreo en Red") – promoted by Redeia RedEléctrica (Spain) ✅ REPRISE – Ecosystem restoration for risk prevention and ecosystem services (New Caledonia), presented by the Comité français de l'UICN ✅ Sustainable restoration of coastal dune systems – Addressing global environmental challenges (Girona, Spain). (From the H2020 IMPETUS Project) ✅ Integrated water resource management through NbS – (Rwanda) We also had the opportunity to visit on-the-ground examples of successful NbS applications near Valencia, implemented by national, regional, and local governments, reinforcing the power of nature in tackling climate challenges. A huge thank you to all our partners for their collaboration and commitment, and a special appreciation to our hosts and coordinators, CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici and TECNALIA Research & Innovation, for their excellent organization! Let’s keep working together for a more resilient Mediterranean. 🌍💚 #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateResilience #DesirMED #HorizonEU #IUCN #Sustainability #Mediterranean #Impetus

🌍 IUCN contributes to the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD) 2026-2035 🌿 IUCN was invited to participate and provide inputs in the Thematic Ad-Hoc Meeting of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD), held in Istanbul, Türkiye, on 12-13 February, where the first draft of the 2026-2035 Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD) was presented and discussed. Building on past achievements, the updated strategy integrates new global commitments, including the Global Biodiversity Framework. It calls on the Mediterranean community at local, national, and regional levels to seize financial opportunities and governance mechanisms within the Mediterranean and European frameworks to drive joint action. Ten new flagship initiatives were presented during the meeting for this new strategy, including four where IUCN plays a key role as a partner: 🌱 The Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas, strengthening conservation standards across the region. Led by IUCN-Med. 🌊 Protection and restoration of Seagrass/Posidonia Meadows, essential for marine biodiversity and climate resilience. 🏖️ Sustainable, Inclusive, and Resilient Blue Tourism, promoting sustainable economic models that benefit nature and local communities. 🌳 Mediterranean Forest Initiative, supporting ecosystem restoration and climate adaptation. During the meeting, IUCN-Med Director, Maher Mahjoub, reaffirmed IUCN-Med’s commitment to working with UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention UNEP/MAP - SPA/RAC, and Plan Bleu to provide technical support and facilitate collaborative projects that benefit both the northern and southern Mediterranean. 🌊As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Barcelona Convention and UNEP/MAP, IUCN-Med looks forward to participating in the COP 24 for the Protection of the Marine Environment in Egypt and will be part in various events. #Mediterranean #Sustainability #Biodiversity #Conservation #BarcelonaConvention #UNEP

🌍 Strengthening conservation efforts for the Iberian desman.🤝 🚨 The Iberian desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) is facing increasing threats due to habitat loss, water pollution, and climate change. To counteract these challenges, IUCN Med convened more than 50 experts from Andorra, Spain, France, and Portugal in Madrid for a three-day working session to develop a crucial transnational conservation plan for this rare and elusive freshwater species. 🔎 Experts collaborated to identify the most urgent conservation measures, enhance cross-border cooperation, and ensure the desman’s survival through improved habitat management and policy recommendations. Following this workshop, a transboundary committee will formalised to facilitate the coordination and monitoring of conservation activities across the species' range. 📖 Read more about the outcomes of this meeting: https://lnkd.in/dsatCvh8 #Biodiversity #Conservation #IberianDesman #ThreatenedSpecies
