Our thoughts are with those affected by the severe flooding in Valencia. We extend our condolences to the community. This event underscores the need for accurate, timely weather information. Our commitment to improving climate resilience through precise forecasting feels more urgent than ever, and Meteomatics is a key partner in this effort. The KAIROS project aims to make AI-driven forecasts accessible to the aviation sector, but also to contribute to the accuracy of climate information more broadly. This could equip communities and authorities with the insights they need to better prepare for extreme weather events.
This past week, the Valencia region in Spain was hit by a powerful and unexpected storm that brought record-breaking rainfall, leaving parts of the area flooded and heavily impacted. Initially striking southern Spain, the storm swept east by evening, bringing severe downpours to Valencia. The combination of strong winds, mountainous terrain, and humid Mediterranean air created a rare weather pattern, leading to over 400 mm of rainfall within 24 hours southwest of Valencia. In Chiva, over 491 mm was recorded, close to the historic 817 mm 24-hour record from 1987. Having accurate, high-resolution weather data is crucial during events like this. Our EURO1k model predicted the storm’s unique path and intensity, providing communities and services with critical early information. From helping local authorities prepare and allocate resources to supporting airlines in navigating extreme conditions, data-driven insights empower communities to withstand and respond to severe weather better. While we are aware of the challenges and hardships caused by this storm, we’re committed to delivering accurate, reliable weather intelligence that supports resilience and helps communities, businesses, and individuals prepare for and respond to severe weather impacts.
