In 1973, when Lawton School started teaching English in Spain, learning a second language opened a new world of opportunities for people in Asturias. It allowed communication and understanding and is still a universal communication tool and the essential business language. In 2023 we continue helping our loyal students (gracias a todxs por estos 50 increíbles años en #Asturias!)to learn English and other languages, whilst we see more international people coming to #Asturias than ever before, attracted by the rising entrepreneurial ecosystem, nature, and quality of life. To celebrate #50years of helping people from Asturias learn languages, we are now adding a new one-in-a-kind program for international professionals who need or want to learn Spanish here. Today is World Mental Health Day. It is an important day in the calendar for raising awareness, education and advocacy against stigma, though one day a year for the over 1 billion people worldwide who are affected by mental health issues somehow doesn't feel sufficient. I am happy and grateful that my children's school has this week focused on mental health awareness as part of their wellness programme. It's a far cry from how my and previous generations were expected to suppress anything like emotional or psychological wellbeing. The way children are now being helped to describe and discuss feelings and emotions has the potential to be incredibly empowering as they develop and grow into young adults, in what can be a challenging, confusing and devisive world. So today the older children went off to school wearing yellow and excited for the day ahead, which I hope will help create lasting a positive association for them around the importance of mental health 💛 While that may bode well for the future, there is still plenty of work to be done to remove the stigma of mental health in society and the workplace. It should go without saying that for many people this is not something they have the luxury of only thinking about once a year. Life can become a daily struggle to the point where the smallest things at home or at work can completely consume or derail you. Checking in with people, friends, family, colleagues, and giving them the opportunity and space to share experiences and frustrations can be lifesaver. Raising awareness today is great, but what really makes a difference is taking time to check in on your own, and others, mental health every day.
