💡 Earlier this year, Iceland issued a one-year licence for Hvalur—the last whaling company in Europe—to hunt more than 100 fin whales. This decision followed a temporary ban in 2023 over serious cruelty concerns and violations of the Icelandic Animal Welfare Act. Hvalur’s CEO Kristján Loftsson has now requested an indefinite whaling licence - and the timing here is no coincidence, with a pro-whaling caretaker government currently in place until a new administration is elected at the end of the month. 3 other whale hunting applications are also with the ministry. ❗ Given the current transition within Iceland’s government, we, along with more than 100 other international conservation groups such as SeaLegacy, Gallifrey Foundation, OceanCare, and Whale and Dolphin Conservation, have written to the President, Halla Tómasdóttir. We respectfully urge her to ensure the caretaker government operates within its mandated remit and allow due process to take place, which would include allowing the government-appointed committee on the future viability of whaling to finish its work. 🇮🇸 A new poll shows that 51 percent of the country's citizens believe that it would be inappropriate to decide on whaling licenses while an interim government is in power. A hasty decision now could undermine Iceland’s standing as a responsible steward of the world’s ocean and disregard the majority of Icelanders who oppose whaling and see this activity as weakening Iceland’s position in international trade. 🐋 Fin whales are listed as vulnerable to extinction, and continued hunting threatens global conservation efforts. This is a pivotal moment for Iceland to reaffirm its commitment to conservation and align with international allies working to protect vulnerable species like the fin whale. We urge President Halla Tómasdóttir to stand with us and the people of Iceland to preserve these majestic and vulnerable creatures. Did you know that despite EU regulations, dolphinariums across Europe continue to hold cetaceans in captivity in unhealthy and inadequate conditions? Most facilities fail to meet the biological needs of cetaceans, providing unsafe habitats for these animals and causing intense psychological stress and unnatural behaviours. Spain holds the highest number of cetaceans in captivity in the EU, with an estimated 106 animals in tanks. This issue fuels our mission and has inspired the unique design of our first jewellery collection, One Voice, in partnership with activist Olivia Mandle Navarro. Through this collection, we unite as one voice against captivity and for a healthy ocean. With 100% of the profits from this collection supporting the campaign to end captivity and protect our ocean, each piece serves as a step closer to a world where all cetaceans live free. 💙 One voice. The two-week United Nations Biodiversity Conference of the Parties (COP16) concluded last Friday in Cali, Colombia, leaving the ocean community with a mixed bag of outcomes. Here's what stood out for us: ❗ Identifying ecologically valuable ocean areas: COP16 saw the adoption of a standardised method for identifying ocean areas with high ecological value, updating the current Ecologically or Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) process to now include international waters. This is a crucial step towards implementing the High Seas Treaty, to be ratified by June 2025, as it provides a scientific foundation for identifying potential Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the high seas, which cover 64% of the ocean area. ❗ The High Seas Treaty: While it was not formally integrated into the COP16 agenda, the Treaty's importance for ocean protection was acknowledged in various events and discussions. The Treaty provides a legal mechanism for creating MPAs in areas beyond national jurisdiction, a crucial aspect of achieving the 30x30 target for ocean protection, agreed at COP15 in 2022. ❗ Financing for biodiversity: Although the Global Biodiversity Fund received additional pledges totalling $396 million, the Conference concluded without a concrete agreement on the overall financing strategy.
