🔬 **New Research Alert: #Nanoplastics in #HumanBlood** 🧬 We're excited to share the findings of a significant study published in Science of the Total Environment (STOTEN). This research, developed by our partners from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and AIMPLAS · Instituto Tecnológico del Plástico, provides the first comprehensive evaluation of the bloodstream kinetics and toxicity of nanoplastics (NPLs). Key insights from the study: - Monocytes exhibit higher internalization of NPLs compared to other white blood cells. - Lymphocytes are particularly prone to oxidative stress when exposed to specific NPLs. - Changes in cytokine release and evidence of haemolysis were observed, varying with the type of NPL. This study underscores the urgent need to understand how NPLs, now ubiquitous in our environment, impact human health. As part of the PlasticHeal project, we are committed to advancing this critical area of research. One of the main difficulties faced by researchers studying #microplastics and #nanoplastics is the lack of reference materials to analyse. PlasticHeal project coordinator Alba Hernández Bonilla, from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, is well aware of this challenge. She says: "Micronanoplastics (#MNPLs) is an umbrella term for many materials. Under this nomenclature there are many different particles, different polymers of different sizes and shapes. If we think about real-world exposure to micro- and nanoplastics, it will be a mixture. But when we bring it into the lab, we still don't have the technological means to expose cells to the same MNPLs that we find in the environment. So we have to use models. We have commercial polystyrene in different sizes, fluorescently labelled or not. 80-90% of the work published in recent years has been done with this polystyrene. How representative is it of the plastics that people are exposed to? It is a huge leap. We have tried and succeeded in getting more representative materials, from tea bags to PET bottles. But we are limited. That's one of the big challenges, to get these reference materials to prove that everything we've found can be reproduced in them, or even to find other relevant effects." Alba is one of the experts interviewed by the Découpages team as part of a documentary on the impact of micro- and nanoplastics on human health. The documentary examines the work developed by the five projects gathered in the CUSP_Research: Imptox, AURORA Research, PlasticsFatE, Polyrisk Research Project and PlasticHeal. #H2020 #EU #Science #EUResearch #Research #Plastics #Health #Toxic #TV #Media #Audiovisual #Interview

Over the past three years, the research teams within the CUSP_Research (AURORA Research, Imptox, PlasticsFatE, Polyrisk Research Project and PlasticHeal) have made significant strides in uncovering the health risks posed by micro- and #nanoplastics (MNPLs). The Cluster has just launched its latest policy brief, "Micro- and Nanoplastics and Public Health: A Reasonable Concern," which highlights key findings and emphasizes the urgency of addressing this emerging issue. Key insights include: ❗ MNPLs, particularly nanoplastics, may have carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reproductive toxic effects. ⚠MNPLs can enter the human body through inhalation and ingestion, with the potential to translocate into the bloodstream. 😷 Long-term health impacts remain understudied and further research is required to understand dose-response relationships and mechanisms of action. The CUSP research underscores the importance of: ☣ Investigating the hazards, exposures, and risks of various types of plastics and their additives. 🔬 Conducting long-term studies to close the current knowledge gaps. 🇪🇺 Informing European policies on chemicals, plastics, food, and water safety. This findings are critical for regulatory decision-making, highlighting areas such as carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, respiratory #toxicity, and environmental fate. We call for more comprehensive studies to ensure a safer future for all. 🔗 Read the full policy brief and discover more about our research and its implications for public health: https://lnkd.in/dVzaXxFJ #Microplastics #Nanoplastics #PublicHealth #Research #Policy #HealthImpact #Environment #Health #Sustainability #EUResearch #Cancer #Plastic
