Urban Planning Specialist at Commission for lands Zanzibar

What better way to start the new year than by sharing knowledge? I am excited to announce the publication of our article titled "Stone Town Built Heritage Identity as a Stimulus to Sustainable Urban Growth within Zanzibar City." This paper is part of my ongoing PhD research on "The Roles of Planning in Conserving Urban Built Heritage: A Case of Stone Town in Zanzibar City". Understanding our cultural values and identity provides a strong foundation for achieving sustainable and resilient growth across all aspects of urbanization—spatial, social, economic, environmental, and more. Sharing this part of my research has not only filled me with joy but has also motivated me to further explore the role of culture as a vital element in the formulation of equitable, resilient, and sustainable urban development. Most importantly, how our built environment reflects our identity. I hope this research will deepen our understanding of the crucial connections between urban planning practices and cultural heritage conservation in the Zanzibar region and beyond. You can find the full research text here:  https://lnkd.in/daFi9mVz. I hope you enjoy reading it! #AaltoWitLab #REDIProgram

Heritage Coexistence event took place in the MPavilion designed by Tadao Ando on December 11th, in the Queen Victoria Gardens. The Gardens are recognised as being of State Significance and listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, with many heritage monuments inside as well. But all of this takes place on Country, on the unceded lands of the people of the Eastern Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land where the MPavilion now stands. I want to pay my respects to their Ancestors and Elders, past and present. They have been caring for this Country for thousands of generations and created multiple, invaluable, tangible and intangible, spatial and temporal layers of heritage, that we live today and that will continue to live in the future. The main idea behind the Heritage Coexistence concept that I developed is to bring together Western (Euro-centric) and Indigenous ideas of heritage in an open-ended and experimental way and allow other forms of heritage to emerge. The intent was to spark a debate and pose questions rather than seek answers. The incredible Professor Laurajane Smith, dr Beau de Belle and Rob Adams AM, in conversation with me brought together incredible insights and questions drawing from their unique and diverse experiences and practices. Then, as the sun set, a work that I produced as a heritage coexistence experiment with the Tadao Ando’s pavilion, the Queen Victoria Gardens and ideas on heritage using the LIDAR technology. In Tadao Ando’s space, the point cloud scans of the pavilion and its surroundings created an experimental visual experience of these elements dissolving and blending into coexistence – in this way, re-thinking the hierarchies and layers of heritage and extending on the questions opened that day. The animation and projection mapping was done by 3D motion design artist Marvin Gerrald. Thank you RMIT University, Suzie Attiwill, Roger Kemp, Phoebe Whitman, Elaine Chia and everyone else who helped shape this event. Huge thank you to the audiences who joined and enriched the conversation. I’m so excited to invite you to Heritage Coexistence - the event that I am organising for the MPavilion Season 11 Home Ground edition. It will be a thought-provoking talk and a visual experience that sees heritage from new, open-ended angles. Questions of heritage can be fraught. This event begins with a talk focusing on the intertwined First Nations, colonial, and natural heritage embedded in Queen Victoria Gardens. The discussion will feature Professor Laurajane Smith, Dr Beau de Belle, and Rob Adams AM, who will bring Western and Indigenous architectural and cultural perspectives together and allow alternate forms of heritage to emerge. The conversation will then expand to a city scale, and audiences are encouraged to ask questions and contribute to help push ideas into new territory. Then, as the sun sets, the internal geometries of the pavilion will become a canvas for an immersive light installation. It’s a work that creatively adapts the duplicate light detection and ranging technology (LIDAR) used in geological mapping to trace the familiar details of the pavilion and project them back in strange new ways. When: December 11th, 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM Where: MPavilion, Queen Victoria Gardens Book your tickets on the link: https://lnkd.in/gbpc-rFg (it's free, but bookings are recommended) Thanks Marvin Gerrald for projection mapping and animation. ArchitectureAu selected Heritage Coexistence as one of the top architecture and design events from Home Ground: https://lnkd.in/g9AVmXUD And it was also shared on What's On Melbourne: https://lnkd.in/gmD3CCiP If you're in Melbourne, please join us! Thanks Elaine Chia, Suzie Attiwill, Roger Kemp, Andy Miller, Phoebe Whitman for all your support. RMIT University supports this event. Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow and PhD Candidate under the REDI program working on modeling, simulation & mechanical testing of metal-polymer hybrid architected lattice materials.

Last week I checked another Australian state off my list, South Australia! When I attended the CAMS2024 conference and presented my research on Hybrid Lattice structures. The conference was hosted at the University of South Australia in Adelaide. I had a great time in another beautiful Australian city with sunshine and blue skies. While there I was able to attend other presentations by researchers in my field and build new relationships through the networking events. I'd like to thank my supervisors (Justin Dirrenberger & Andrey Molotnikov), friends, and colleagues for their continued support as well as for attending my presentation. Lastly, the REDI Program for this amazing PhD experience without which none of this would be possible. Here's to future conferences! #RMITUniversity #CNAM #REDIProgram #PhDLife
