Estimados miembros de SEMNI, estimados amigos, Desde la presidencia de SEMNI, queremos transmitir nuestra solidaridad y empatía a todas las víctimas de la catástrofe provocada por la DANA durante los pasados días. En particular a nuestros amigos de la Comunidad Valenciana y de las otras Comunidades afectadas en menor medida. A pesar de que este fenómeno meteorológico es endémico en nuestra geografía, somos conscientes de que la ciencia y la ingeniería son las herramientas que han de proporcionar soluciones para mitigar su virulencia (especialmente los incrementos de origen antrópico), para acondicionar las infraestructuras que vertebran el territorio y para definir las estrategias que den respuesta inmediata a la emergencia. SEMNI, como comunidad científica, tiene mucho que decir en estas disciplinas y, pasados estos momentos de emergencia y luto, tendremos que reflexionar en cómo ponernos a disposición de la sociedad en estos temas. Estimados amigos de SEMNI, Nos satisface enormemente compartir con vosotros que Eugenio Oñate ha recibido el Premio Nacional de Investigación 2024 en la categoría Leonardo Torres Quevedo. Como sabéis, este premio es la máxima distinción que el Gobierno de España puede otorgar a un científico, reconociendo en este caso el impacto del trabajo de Eugenio a lo largo de su carrera. Eugenio es un miembro muy destacado de nuestra comunidad: fue miembro fundador y presidente de SEMNI, y recibió el premio O.C. Zienkiewicz de SEMNI en 2007. Sería demasiado largo enumerar las contribuciones de Eugenio a la mecánica e ingeniería computacionales. Basta señalar el impulso a la investigación de calidad y a la transferencia de conocimiento que generó en su labor como fundador y director de CIMNE. Sin olvidar su compromiso con la excelencia en la docencia en ingeniería, que refleja su larga carrera en la Escuela de Caminos de Barcelona (UPC), de la que fue director.
