Highlights of the Global Energy Transition in 2024🌞⚡ 2024 has been a transformative year for the global energy landscape, with solar power and battery storage leading the way. According to Ember, here are the key highlights reshaping our energy systems: 1️⃣ Solar supercharges renewables: A record-breaking 593 GW of solar was installed globally, a 29% increase from last year, cementing its role as a driver of the renewable revolution. 2️⃣ New solar superpowers emerge: Beyond China, nations like Chile and regions like Rajasthan in India are leading the charge, achieving unprecedented shares of solar in their electricity mix. 3️⃣ Batteries take off: With prices falling and capacity increasing, grid-scale batteries are set to transform energy storage. Global commitments to scale up storage are unlocking the full potential of renewables. 4️⃣ Wind and solar surpass fossil fuels: In the EU, wind and solar generated more electricity than fossil fuels in the first half of 2024. The US also saw renewables outpace coal for nearly the entire year. 5️⃣ Coal's decline accelerates: Coal generation across OECD nations has halved since its 2007 peak, with many countries on track to phase it out completely by 2030. #Europe Adds 66 GW of solar PV capacity in 2024, but growth slows down 🌞 The European Union has set a new record in solar energy additions, reaching 65.5 GW this year. However, annual growth has dropped to 4.4%, the slowest pace since 2017, according to the latest SolarPower Europe report. Why the slowdown? 👉 Grid saturation: Current infrastructure has not kept up with the rapid solar expansion. 👉 Reduced residential incentives: Key countries have scaled back schemes like net metering. 👉 Regulatory and political challenges: Policy changes and limited access to land are hindering large-scale projects. To meet 2030 climate targets and ensure energy security, Europe must install 70 GW of solar annually. Now more than ever, decisive actions are required to increase the flexibility of the energy system, accelerate electrification across sectors, and support the local manufacturing of critical components such as inverters.
