We had an amazing week at the ELIXIR #BioHackEU24! A great team from Spanish National Bioinformatics Institute (INB)/ELIXIR-ES led projects to address challenges in research infrastructures and bioinformatics in topics like research software quality, software contributions, secure data access, cohort data models, gender representation... BioHackathon Europe projects https://lnkd.in/etVTQxeW
🎉 #BioHackEU24 has come to an end! Thank you all for joining us this year. And a special thanks to those who participated online and overseas for staying up late hacking through different projects with us 🙌. 👏 It’s amazing to see over 300 participants on-site and online hacking their way through 30 projects, creating new and enhancing existing #opensource features and resources for #lifescience researchers. It has been a great week with lots of fruitful outcomes and we look forward to seeing you next year for #BioHackEU25 in Berlin, Germany! 🥳

🗞️ New paper out in NPJ Biodiversity! More than 200 scientists from 33 European countries join forces to create genomes for the continent's species 🚀 Under the motto 'Better Together' to combat biodiversity loss, the researchers launched the ERGA - European Reference Genome Atlas Pilot Project: a network which aims to produce DNA maps for the European species 🧬 So far, they obtained 98 genomes. The next goal is to produce genomes on a larger scale, contributing to the challenge of the Earth BioGenome Project, which is to create a genomic blueprint for all the eukaryotic species around the world ➡ Our contribution from #CNAG Our center is one of the ERGA genome sequencing hubs, responsible for sequencing and assembling the genomes of species. CNAG is also a member of the ERGA Sequencing and Assembly Committee, and we have launched the ERGA Genome Tracking Console (ERGA-GTC), an online tool designed to streamline species prioritization and track sample metadata and genomic information to date The team that leads this Pilot Project from CNAG: Marta Gut, Tyler Alioto, Jèssica Gómez Garrido and Fernando Cruz 🦋 Why is a map of a species important for biodiversity? The genome has become a very useful tool for animal, plant, and fungal conservation policies, as genes hold the keys to understanding how a species can adapt to its environment and survive With the participation of other Spanish institutions: Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-Universitat Pompeu Fabra), Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Institut Botànic de Barcelona, Estación Biológica de Doñana - CSIC, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, IRB Barcelona, Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red CIBER, and Instituto Nacional de Bioinformática (INB) 📎https://lnkd.in/d6Z3hdXE

ELIXIR has launched the ELIXIR Cancer Data Community to enhance cancer data accessibility, quality and interoperability. The ELIXIR Cancer Data Community is co-led by Fatima Al-Shahrour, INB/ELIXIR-ES PI and Head of the Bioinformatics Unit at the CNIO - Spanish National Cancer Research Centre, together with colleagues from ELIXIR France and ELIXIR Norway. The Community was established in early 2024 and has three main aims: ➡ Disseminate existing open solutions ➡ Promote cross-project and cross-initiative collaborations ➡ Design and develop missing community standards The new Community enhances ELIXIR’s existing activities in cancer data, which include EOSC4Cancer coordinated by Barcelona Supercomputing Center part of Spanish National Bioinformatics Institute (INB)/ELIXIR Spain, the European Federation for Cancer Images (EUCAIM) and the Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI) with partners from INB/ELIXIR-ES involved, and canSERV . 🔗 Read the news https://lnkd.in/dW_mRHzt #datamanagement #standards #opensolutions #cancer
