SYNAPSE is a company specialised in the management of research and development projects in the biomedical sector, working with a great variety of stakeholders at both national and international levels (pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies, research centres, academia, hospitals, regulatory authorities, public health authorities, etc.). Located in Barcelona, SYNAPSE focuses on complex, distributed research and development projects that are highly innovative, ambitious (several million Euros of funding), and distributed (based on the collaboration of teams scattered in different institutions and countries), with a specific focus on European projects. SYNAPSE services aim to support the scientific coordination at all levels throughout the project life cycle and include strategic planning and scoping of the project, configuration and development of the work plan (full Work Breakdown Structure, including definition of milestones and deliverables), development of governance mechanisms, design and implementation of management tools, budget elaboration and financial monitoring, knowledge management, legal management, design and deployment of a dissemination and communication strategy, and exploitation of research results. The expertise of the team covers: project management, financial and legal assessment, exploitation and IPR management, knowledge management, validation and assessment, business planning, training, dissemination and communication strategies design and implementation. SYNAPSE’s interdisciplinary structure includes specialists in biochemistry and pre-clinical research, project management, finance, law, research exploitation, education and marketing.

The second day of our Innovative Health Initiative (IHI)funded IHI-PROMINENT consortium meeting started with a presentation by Sofie Persson (IHE - The Swedish Institute for Health Economics) about real-world evidence for new health technologies. This was followed by Lena Sannemann who spoke about the implementation, evaluation and validation studies that will be conducted to ensure that our digital platform meets the needs of both specialists as well as patients. Next, we discussed the private sector contributions in PROMINENT with a presentation by Lennart Thurfjell (Combinostics). Before moving onto our networking coffee break we took a nice group photo at the beautiful premises of Fundación Pasqual Maragall. Shortly after, Christophe Bintener (Alzheimer Europe) presented on the communication activities, followed by Sebastien Libert (Alzheimer Europe) introducing the work on Public Involvement. Last but definitely not least, our excellent Project Managers Andrea Martí del Rio (SYNAPSE Research Management Partners) and Anna Hansson (Karolinska Institutet) presented on the management aspects of the project, noting that the consortium is well aligned with the planned timeline and deliverables. We'd like to thank all consortium members for their great contributions and wish them safe travels home!
The IHI-PROMINENT Management Team, led by our colleague Andrea Martí del Rio from SYNAPSE and Anna Hansson from Karolinska Institutet, works to integrate efforts across all work packages and ensure proper progress of the project, including good internal communication tools to facilitate work dynamics. The recommendation of lecanemab, the first disease-modifying therapy (DMT) for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), by the European Medicines Agency constitutes a major breakthrough for the dementia community. However, several steps still remain before patients can access these new treatments, which are bound to challenge European healthcare systems. A major remaining hurdle is overcoming pricing and reimbursement discussions which will take place within each individual country. Further, health care systems will need to address limited capacity of specialist services for diagnosis and treatment. Supporting clinicians with tools to help them identify the patients most likely to benefit from these new therapies is therefore vital to improve health systems readiness and ensure quality care for people with AD. Diagnosis and management of AD are challenging due to the high incidence of comorbidities, such as cardiovascular and psychiatric conditions. By considering individual differences in patients’ genetic makeup, lifestyles and clinical parameters, precision medicine has the potential to dramatically improve diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of AD. Considering these individual differences may help identify patients who may encounter adverse effects. Last year, we asked members of the European Alzheimer’s Disease Consortium (EADC) of memory clinics about challenges in determining a diagnosis and managing patient care. Their responses underscored the need for decision support systems in clinical practice.
