The Web App De Metende Mens (Counting on Nature) recently launched! It shows images and stories that investigate people, who are in turn investigating nature. For this project, Hans van der Meer visited sixty monitoring projects spread throughout the Netherlands between 2019 and 2024. 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 features a broad range of scientific projects that are measuring and monitoring nature. From the levels of nitrogen deposits in soil, to the declining populations of species like pine martens, eels and garlic toads to name just a few. But in essence, this is about mankind, Paradox and Hans van der Meer say. No country has collected more data per square kilometer on the condition of air, water and soil than the Netherlands. Developments in nature are widely monitored by professionals and volunteers, using everything from hi-tech methods to straightforward counts. The vulnerability of our ecosystems, and therefore our future, is central to this. Will the collection of data, and the accumulation of scientific evidence, ultimately lead us towards an era in which humans no longer position themselves above nature, but alongside it? De newspaper Volkskrant published two series of a total of fifteen image/text columns in 2019 and 2023/2024. The book 'Counting on Nature' will be published by Paradox in 2025/2026. Another 45 stories will be added to the current 15 on the Web App. The page is currently in Dutch but will be translated to English this year. 💡 Are you inspired by this project? 🌟 Exciting Progress in the Thermo-Staat Project! 🌟 We are thrilled to share the final results on the Thermo-Staat project, a remarkable collaboration between Waag Futurelab, TU Delft, Hogeschool Van Amsterdam and VPRO. This innovative initiative involves citizens measuring temperature and humidity in their homes, empowering them as experts of their living environment. Through citizen science, this project aimed to enhance climate literacy and gain insights into how people experience their surroundings, especially during heatwaves. 📈 Key Results Achieved: - Enhanced Climate Literacy: Citizen scientists engaged in hands-on learning, improving their understanding of climate-related issues. - Data-Driven Insights: Successfully collected and analyzed data on indoor temperatures, contributing to a deeper understanding of heat impacts in residential areas. - International Recognition: The project was nominated for the Prix Europa 2023 as the Best European Interactive Media Project, showcasing the innovative methodologies and community-driven approach. TAUW Nederland and TAUW Belgium, as proud partners, are collaborating with OVAM and other parties on this 5-year research project to develop a systematic and comprehensive approach to the PFAS issue.   🌱Through joint research and the development of innovative remediation techniques and nature-based solutions, we are taking essential steps in the fight against PFAS contamination. We are investigating the composition, distribution, transfer, and risks of the contamination, and we are testing 3 innovative remediation techniques and 5 nature-based solutions. Last week on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th of January, Daria Ofman and Annemarie de Jong from Better Future, took us, TAUW Group, on an impactful and inspiring roadtrip in Rotterdam.   We started with knowing each other better. And to be honest, do you really know your colleagues… do you know how they have been raised, what their thoughts are, what drive them, what kind of assumptions we or others have about you? That was a deep-dive from the start!   Yes, after lunch the roadtrip started. We stepped on our bikes, with our Better Future backpacks on to: hear, see and feel the inspiring stories of beautiful people. This first day we had the honour to hear the story of: - Tim Lobker from RRAworks - Mohamed abdulahi from Moskee de middenweg - Yasmina Khababi from Freshtable   And after a worldtrip dinner we went off to our hotel trying to digest all these inspiring stories. The next morning, no easy start… continu with the deep dive on what this first day did to us. And off we went again, this time a nice walk to meet our last inspiring storyteller, Dirck Slabbekoorn from Heilige Boontjes   Two days, which positively felt like a whole week. Inspiring stories which made us laugh, admire, cry, think, listen, ask questions. Thank you so much to open up your doors and share your touching stories with us. There are not enough words to describe this experience. I'm honored that I was part of this group and that we made our first steps in this journey for TAUW.
