Sobre nosotros
TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary is a leading international art and advocacy foundation. Established in 2002 by philanthropist and art patron Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, the Foundation stewards the TBA21 Collection and its outreach activities, which include exhibitions as well as educational and public programming. TBA21 is based in Madrid, working in association with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, and has other important poles of action in Venice (Italy) and Portland (Jamaica). All activity at TBA21 is fundamentally driven by artists and the belief in art and culture as a carrier of social and environmental transformation, ultimately contributing to the creation of spaces for peace. TBA21–Academy is the foundation’s research arm, fostering a deeper relationship with the Ocean and other bodies of water by working as an incubator for collaborative inquiry, artistic production, and environmental advocacy. For more than a decade, the Academy has catalyzed new forms of knowledge emerging from the exchanges between art, science, policy, and conservation in long-term and collaborative engagement through fellowships, residency programs, and activities in a wide variety of formats. Among its main projects are the art center Ocean Space (Venice), the independent study program Organismo | Art in Applied Critical Ecologies (Madrid, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza), Alligator Head Foundation (Port Antonio, Jamaica), The Current Pacific/ Mediterranean/Caribbean, the online initiative Ocean-Archive.org with OCEAN / UNI, and Bauhaus of the Sea Sails.

COP29 Azerbaijan is in progress in Baku. Acknowledging the ongoing controversies surrounding Azerbaijan’s hosting of the in-person conference, TBA21–Academy has decided to participate in the COP29 Virtual Ocean Pavilion. Following a number of cancellations, there is widespread concern about the future of the Climate Accord, which remains the most important global forum addressing climate change. The Virtual Ocean Pavilion is a free online platform dedicated to raising the visibility of the Ocean and showcasing why it matters in global climate negotiations. The pavilion aims to promote accessibility and inclusivity while generating knowledge, commitment, and action for the ocean-climate nexus at key events during the United Nations Climate Conference. In addition to the virtual exhibition halls, the pavilion also offers live events, interviews and on-location reporting, roundtable discussions, a collection of ocean and climate art, and the latest updates on COP29 proceedings. TBA21–Academy is participating in this initiative as one of the exhibitors, alongside the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD, Australian National Centre for Ocean Research and Security , Blue Ports Initiative, Center for Coastal Studies (Provincetown, MA), Communications INC, Global Ocean Forum, MARVIVA, Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), The Common Oceans Program, and the United Nations Ocean Conference 2025. Log into the pavilion to learn more about our oceanic initiatives, including our latest exhibitions, our flagship fellowship program The Current, and digital initiatives such as Ocean-Archive.org with OCEAN / UNI and ocean comm/uni/ty. Today–Thursday, November 14, 2024–is our spotlight day, which means you can find us online in the exhibition and chat with us about all things Ocean. ✨ Joan Jonas has been awarded the Nam June Paik Prize 2024 by the Nan June Paik Art Center. The American artist has developed a close collaboration with TBA21 and TBA21–Academy, exploring themes such as nature, climate change and marine ecosystems through various projects ranging from performances to exhibitions. 🌴 The first collaboration between the two sides started with the artist's participation in the program The Current I, commissioned by Ute Meta Bauer. 📚 After that, Jonas took up a residency offered by TBA21–Academy in collaboration with the Alligator Head Foundation in Jamaica in 2019. The residency supported the development of her work ‘Moving of the Land II’, which later evolved to become, firstly, a performance and, later, the exhibition that inaugurated Ocean Space (TBA21–Academy’s space in Venice), which was on view at Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in 2020. 👏 We want to take this opportunity to express our sincerest congratulations to this pioneer of video and performance art. 📸 Bildrecht / TBA21

This October, Markus Reymann, TBA21–Academy Director and TBA21 Co-Director, attended the #CAFOceanDay, organized in the context of the 2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP16 Colombia) in Cali, Colombia, among other participants from key institutions of this agenda. Our Co-director spoke about TBA21’s work on the intersections of art, ocean, peace, and advocacy, connecting artistic expression and environmental awareness on the vital role that biodiversity plays in planetary thriving. The contribution was accompanied by a screening of ‘All Bleeding Stops Eventually’ (2019), a series of short films produced by Will Benedict and DIS.ART. This work is commissioned by TBA21–Academy for Ocean-Archive.org. This artwork, initially created in response to the IPCC’s Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere, encourages the natural world to speak for itself. The anthropomorphic figures in the videos carry a message to all humans: in order to protect all planetary life, we have to understand that we are part of it. At TBA21, we are looking forward to continuing to foster a deeper understanding of the Ocean and wider ecologies through our participation in the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference. 🌍 Our co-director, Rosa Ferré, has participated in the Culture and Climate Change panel at the current edition of the G20 Brasil 2024. The conference aims to highlight the importance of culture in the process of change, offering innovative responses and discussing ways to support the sector in the challenges ahead. 🗣️ Among the speakers, the Minister of Culture of Brazil (Ministério da Cultura), Margareth Menezes, emphasised the need to include culture and art in the processes of adaptation to climate change towards a just ecological transition. In the same line, Rosa Ferré made a reference to Ursula K. Le Guin to underline that what is important is not what art is for, but what art does for us. "Data and knowledge alone are not enough to face the challenges of climate change", she explained. Furthermore, she pointed out that the science-policy interface must be complemented by the emotions and engagement of society. ‘Art and culture have the power to create meaning, provide context and foster empathy, all of which are essential to transform knowledge into action’, she remarked. 🎙️ Petra Linhartova speaking! 🐚 Tomorrow, October 25, Petra Linhartova, TBA21 Director of Digital & Innovation, will be participating in 'Ocean Around Us – Echoes of the Abyss: Toxic Legacies of Oceanic Ecologies', an interdisciplinary symposium exploring coastlines and marine environments through ecological, anthropological, geopolitical, and cultural lenses. 🪸 The symposium stems from the ongoing project Echoes of the Abyss, initiated by Robertina Šebjanič. This project examines the environmental impact of munitions disposal in oceans and the complex human-ecological dynamics that affect marine ecosystems. Ocean Around Us builds on the Echoes of the Abyss project, which began with artist R. Šebjanič’s residency aboard the TARA in 2023, focusing on the Baltic Sea 🌊. 🌱 In 2024, the project shifted to the Northern Adriatic Sea, examining leftover munitions on the seafloor. It explores how decaying weapons release chemicals that alter water composition and impact marine life, particularly organisms exposed to these contaminants. Acts of war and human greed are reshaping not only global realities but also oceanic environments on both micro and macro levels. Find more info here: https://lnkd.in/dBVYP8Sb

Europe’s Water Crisis: A Call for Action 🌍 🫂 At TBA21, we are deeply committed to the protection of water bodies. The latest report by the European Environment Agency, Europe's State of Water 2024, highlights the urgent need for improved water resilience to secure a sustainable future for all. 📉 Water stress affects 20% of Europe's land and 30% of its population annually, with figures expected to rise due to the climate crisis. Flood risks, caused by increased intense rainfall, threaten ecosystems, including their human and more-than-human inhabitants. 🚨 Urgent action is needed to improve water resilience; most importantly, multidisciplinary collaboration and coordinated advocacy for the most pressing issues facing water bodies today. That is why TBA21 is committed to catalysing and supporting initiatives bringing together experts, activists, and communities that work on the protection and regeneration of aquatic ecosystems through legal frameworks, artistic interventions, educational initiatives, and more. One of the examples of such work is the Confluence of European Water Bodies, an initiative founded by the Ambassade van de Noordzee , #ILPMarMenor, and #TBA21–Academy, springing from the collective pursuit of the rights of nature in Europe. This itinerant platform brings together more than 25 grassroots communities of artists, activists, lawyers and ecologists, representing seas, lakes, rivers, lagoons, and glaciers from all over Europe. #WaterResilience #ClimateAction #OceanProtection #Sustainability #TBA21 https://lnkd.in/dA3hEXTn
