In the #Mediterranean region, variability analysis plays a key role due to the unique climatic and environmental challenges faced by this area. The Mediterranean climate is characterised by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, making agricultural systems particularly sensitive to variability in precipitation, temperature and extreme weather events. Variability analysis of #EarthObservation indices is valuable for farmers and decision makers: By understanding where and when variability in #vegetation and moisture is increasing, stakeholders can make data-driven decisions to stabilise production and reduce risks from climate variability. By understanding how agroclimatic factors affect #crop variability and health, this data can guide resource allocation, improve water management and ultimately enhance the sustainability of #agriculture in the Mediterranean and other climate-vulnerable regions. More information can be found in #Zenodo. Seasonal RGB composites from Sentinel-2 (2017-2024), presenting detailed, high-resolution satellite imagery for several Mediterranean regions. This dataset includes Catalonia (Spain), Sétif (Algeria), Behia and Kafr Elsheikh governorates (Egypt), Marseille (France) and Sicily (Italy). 🔗 Explore the dataset on Zenodo: https://lnkd.in/dxQv4sR3

Innovative resilient farming systems in Mediterranean environments. Funded by the PRIMA Programme.
Sobre nosotros
The goal of TRANSITION is to pave the way for a shift towards resilient agriculture in the Mediterranean basin, maximizing the net positive impact on the environment, while increasing resilience of agroecosystems and rural societies. This is done by analysing the most relevant innovative solutions in resilient agroforestry and mixed farming systems using a participatory approach. TRANSITION is working to identify appropriate strategies to improve resilience of the agriculture sector, to establish what are the environmental and socio-economic barriers to resilient agriculture implementation and to quantify the system productivity and delivery of ecosystem services. Project activities are structured around in-depth studies of the resilience and productivity of agroforestry and mixed farming systems in 5 Mediterranean regions in Spain, Italy, Algeria, Egypt, and France. Agroforestry, the integration of woody vegetation with crop or animal systems, can offer higher net primary productivities due to increased efficiency of use of sunlight and other resources, while helping to protect soil from erosion, improving soil health, and improving landscape biodiversity. Mixed farming systems, on the other hand, are inherently circular in their approach since manure is directly reincorporated into crop production, and they make the best use of farm residues. Mixed farming systems also maintain soil fertility, biodiversity, and have many other benefits.

🌍🌱 Proud to see the TRANSITION Project, funded by the PRIMA Partnership, participating in #CoP29 to showcase its impactful work on mixed farming models and agroforestry, driving increased resilience to climate change and fostering sustainable agriculture across the Mediterranean region. 🌾✨ #Resilience #ClimateAction #Sustainability #SoilHealth #Agroforestry #PRIMA #CoP29
We are thrilled to share that the TRANSITION Project was invited to participate in the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association - EMEA- Side Event at COP29, focusing on Financing Agroforestry: Exploring Diverse Financing Schemes for Sustainable Land Use. This event highlighted the critical role of innovative financing mechanisms in supporting agroforestry as a sustainable solution for land use. Agroforestry systems not only enhance biodiversity and improve soil health but also contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, making them a cornerstone for resilient landscapes.

The TRANSITION Project is coming to an end! 🌳 🌾 🌍 Its final results will contribute to a better understanding of the role that #agroforestry systems and mixed cropping can play in increasing the resilience of #Mediterranean agroecosystems in the face of #GlobalChange. In this region, the effects of climate change and other environmental pressures make it necessary to transform conventional agricultural practices towards more sustainable models in the long term. #sustainable #agriculture #farming https://lnkd.in/dpA5WxPp
