En verano siempre me gusta probar cosas en yates: Como integrar temáticas de lujo gallegas ( Pej. Sargadelos, un tanque con 500 l. de Estrella Galicia, etc). Las estructuras internas de cascos y plataformas quiero programarlas en 3d de la manera más efectiva. Las necesito para el testeo en el cálculo los daños en caso de accidentes igual que pretendo hacer en los buques de mayor tamaño. “The Hidden Challenge: Proactive Maintenance in Yachting – The Art of Preventing What You Can’t See ( Just a thought for discussion)” With extensive experience in both the commercial shipping and yachting industry, I have learned the critical importance of proactive maintenance in ensuring vessel safety and performance. Usually, the issues that arise are not immediately visible, but through experience and attention to detail, we can identify and address potential problems before they become serious. “Just an example”, when a minor crack in the teak deck was barely noticeable. Left unchecked, this could have allowed water to seep in and damage the underlying structure. However, by conducting regular deck inspections and spotting these small imperfections early, we were able to prevent a much bigger issue. This illustrates how critical it is to catch these subtle signs before they escalate. Maintaining a yacht is more than just fixing what’s broken – it’s about preventing what might break. From hull integrity checks to systems inspections, each part of the vessel demands meticulous attention. The real challenge lies in passing on the knowledge and experience needed to anticipate potential issues. Modern yachts are complex, and it’s not always the visible wear and tear that causes problems, but often the invisible stress points – the saltwater trapped in corners, the electrical connections that subtly corrode, the materials that fatigue after thousands of miles at sea. Miller Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, USA   ABSTRACT: The 'Muleta' was a traditional Portuguese fishing boat. The last remaining example is the replica ‘Álvaro Velho’ whose 16.5 m wooden lateen mainsail yard failed. This paper concerns the ongoing work to design a composite material replacement. A simple bending only analysis design gave a 40% in weight reduction. To include the effects of shear, a finite element analysis approach has also been undertaken. A baseline numerical model of the strength and stiffness of the original replica yard (conservatively of Douglas Fir) has first been developed, and then very successfully corroborated with the previous simplified analytical model, giving confidence in both approaches. Development of the numerical model to consider shear effects and to give a new, refined composite materials design is underway. The aim is to facilitate economically viable and longer lifecycle composite yard replacements for both the Muleta and the numerous other traditional sailing craft of the Tejo.
