Hybrid #Biomethane Production from Integrated #Biomass Conversion
Sobre nosotros
HYFUELUP is a project funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research an Innovation Programme (Grant Agreement nº 101084148) which aims to develop and advanced technology for biomethane production using gasification and methanation. The biomethane produced will then be liquified and used for the decarbonization of long-distance road freight transport and maritime transportation, with the aim to contribute to the ambitious objectives of the #REPowerEU Plan.

For yet another year, HYFUELUP project has joined the #HorizonEurope cluster meeting on ‘Aviation/maritime fuels and biomethane’ organised by CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency in Brussels (Belgium), on 15 October. The event brought together the beneficiaries of the 36 ongoing Horizon Europe projects focusing on these areas. Our project coordinator, Gonçalo Lourinho, participated in the poster session dedicated to #biomethane, where in addition to presenting the progress and early results of the project, a discussion on the challenges faced by this sector took place.

Spanish magazine RETEMA features an interview with Tatiana Marquez Uriarte, member of the Cabinet of the European Commissioner for #Energy at the European Commission, who offers an enlightening view on the role #renewablegases will play in shaping the continent's energy future. As the European Commission and Member States work to meet ambitious targets, questions arise about the milestones achieved, the remaining challenges and the strategies needed to ensure the effective development and full consolidation of #biogas and biomethane. These are some of her statements about #biomethane: 🧪 "Biomethane plays a crucial role in the decarbonisation of the European energy system" 🧪 "Biomethane, like green hydrogen, offers a more suitable and effective alternative in sectors where electrification is not feasible" 🧪 "Reducing biomethane production costs, which are currently higher than those of natural gas, is a priority. As biomethane prices become more competitive, this renewable gas can be fully integrated into the gas system" 🧪 "The degree of development of the biomethane industry in different European countries is influenced by a variety of factors and is not always directly related to the wealth of the country in question" 🔗Read the complete interview (in Spanish): https://lnkd.in/dunc9xiX CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency #HorizonEurope

Did you know that biogases are affordable, sustainable, and made in Europe? Biogases have the power to break the EU's dependency on natural gas imports with a renewable alternative. Produced sustainably and without competing with food or feed streams, biogases can be a game-changer for Europe's energy future. By 2030, we could produce 44 billion cubic meters of biomethane, enough to cover twice France's current gas consumption. And since it can be injected into the existing gas infrastructure, we can decarbonise the grid without costly investments. A typical biomethane plant powers 🏠 3,700 homes, fuels 🚚 100 bio-LNG trucks, saves 🍃 20,000 tonnes of CO2, and generates 🌱 570 tonnes of organic fertilisers every year. The Biomethane Industrial Partnership (#BIPEurope), has published a report entitled 'Optimizing the Cost of Biomethane Grid Injection' that delves into the technical, regulatory and economic pathways for integrating #biomethane into Europe's extensive gas grid. The text provides a roadmap for optimizing biomethane injection into the grid, which is crucial for Europe's transition to a sustainable energy system, as addressing cost and regulatory barriers paves the way for increased production and use of biomethane. This will significantly contribute to meeting the EU's 2030 biomethane production target and, with it, the EU's clean energy goals. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/erXgSBTY

At HYFUELUP project we are celebrating the publication of our first scientific article!!! 🚀 Filomena Pinto, representative of our partner LNEG, has published together with Paula Costa, Rui André, Paula Marques and Filipe Paradela the article entitled ‘Cleaning and Conditioning of #Biomass Gasification Gas to Produce #Biomethane’ in the prestigious Italian journal Chemical Engineering Transactions (#CET) of the Associazione Italiana d'Ingegneria Chimica (AIDIC). The objective of this article is to study hot cleaning and upgrading processes of gasification gas to allow it to be suitable for biomethane production, since nowadays it is urgent to develop new energy production and utilisation routes to achieve sustainable development with low environmental impact. “Gas produced by #gasification of eucalyptus wastes at 750 ºC and 850 ºC was used to study the hot gas conditioning process. For this, two sequential fixed bed steps with different catalysts or sorbents and at different temperatures were tested. In Pathway A, a low-cost natural mineral, limestone, was used in both steps at temperatures from 500 º to 700 ºC. In Pathway B, limestone was used in the first step and in the second one, a nickel-based catalyst was tested (…) Pathway B showed to be the best option, especially at the highest temperature tested, producing a syngas richer in H2 and CO2, with very low contents of tar and heavier gaseous hydrocarbons”. Chemical Engineering Transactions (CET) aims to be a leading international journal for the publication of original research and review articles in chemical, process, and environmental engineering. This milestone within the project shows that the HYFUELUP project has entered the phase of obtaining the first results and being able to disseminate them, so this article will be the first of many more to come. 🔗 ARTICLE: https://lnkd.in/dKfd7hDP CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency #HorizonEurope
