During my visit to the UNICEF #Ethiopia office this week, I had the privilege of visiting ITU, our UN partner with whom we collaborate across Africa to connect schools and other essential facilities to the internet, through our common project Giga, working hand in hand to bridge the #digitaldivide and foster #digitalinclusion for children. Beyond just mapping schools, it is evident we need to include health, nutrition, child protection, WASH, and other critical areas, and create a shared digital infrastructure that benefits children and families holistically. We are also keen about the possibility of ITU joining UNICEF in our already established collaboration with the African Drone and Data Academy. By leveraging our shared expertise, we aim to drive innovation in drone technology and data management, empowering the next generation of professionals across Africa. All in all, this has been a truly enlightening and exhilarating visit, and my deepest gratitude go to UNICEF Ethiopia for their warm embrace, and for the opportunity to engage with the team on the impressive work they do every day for every child.

  • This week, UNICEF CIO Kaan Cetinturk and Deputy Regional Director Jeremy Hopkins met with Yodahe Zemichael from the Ministry of Innovation And Technology- Ethiopia, along with the team from ICS Ethiopia. Together, they explored innovative ways to scale up #birthregistration and #nationalidentificationsystems. These vital efforts are key to ensuring that all children in Ethiopia, along with their families, can access essential services like healthcare, education, and social protection. Birth registration is more than just a legal document – it’s a gateway to opportunity, protection, and inclusion. UNICEF remains committed to supporting Ethiopia in advancing these systems, ensuring that every child has the right to identity and the tools they need to thrive. #ForEveryChild, identity!

  • At a visit with the Government of Kenya yesterday, UNICEF CIO Kaan Cetinturk reinforced the strong partnership between UNICEF and the Ministry of ICT of Kenya and Digital Economy. Kaan, along with other UNICEF colleagues engaged in discussions with Directors Loyford Murithi and Bwaley Thomas. Both teams reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate on key projects, including: . Scaling up the school connectivity project supported by UNICEF. . Advancing digital skills and education through initiatives like learning platforms, content development, device provision, and teacher training. . Supporting the development of Kenya's AI strategy by sharing insights from UNICEF's processes. More exciting still, Kaan visited Kingeero Primary School in Nairobi later in the afternoon, to witness the impact of UNICEF's school connectivity project, implemented in partnership with Liquid. He saw 7th-grade learners using the computer lab to enhance their studies and interacted with students who expressed their gratitude for the internet resources.   We look forward to continuing our collaboration to drive #digitalimpact, #digitaltransformation and improve educational outcomes in Kenya.

  • Growth of Digital Public Infrastructure an opportunity to scale up digital services for children! The UNICEF Prospects 2025 report, out now, highlights a critical juncture for children's futures, emphasizing the interconnected crises of climate change, conflict, and economic instability. These challenges demand a rethinking and strengthening of systems to uphold children's rights and well-being. One of the opportunities identified is Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). When designed with children at the center, it has the potential to enhance health, child protection, and social protection systems. . Amid rapid adoption around the world, DPI can fundamentally shift how governments engage with citizens. . It can advance children’s well-being by facilitating equitable access to digital education, health care and other services. . But barriers such as persistent gaps in digital access and the lack of clear legal and regulatory frameworks risk undermining its potential. By integrating resilience into every aspect of children's lives, from disaster preparedness to adaptable education and inclusive healthcare, we can build a safer and more supportive world for the next generation. • How are digital tools transforming community health and ensuring no child is left behind? 💉💙 Meet Glenda, a 29-year-old community health promoter in El Salvador. With support from UNICEF, she educates families in remote areas on vaccine-preventable diseases, maternal and child health, and the new vaccination schedule, serving approximately 250 families in her region. Reaching every child can be challenging, but technology helps bridge the gap. From streamlining data entry and monitoring vaccination schedules to enabling better coordination of campaigns, digital tools are empowering health workers like Glenda to cover more ground, track booster doses, and provide families with the support they need. 👉 What do you think of the impact Glenda is making in her community?
